4 stars for the somewhat rushed ending, but i really liked this one!
i am DONE.
after two (TWO) months i finally finished this beast.
it was good. a bit cliché at parts and way way way too long, but i enjoyed it.

me: *remembering all the drama we had in our shakespeare classes back in uni* at least we didn’t murder someone
fact one: i like shakespeare. fact two: i like the secret history. logical conclusion: ihate love absolutely cannot explain want to fling myself from a cliff like this book
look, everyone in dark academia stories is a pretentious arsehole who you’d hate in real life, but if reading a dark academia book doesn’t make you wish you were one of those pretentious arseholes, you’re not reading it right.
still not over the ending (will i ever to be), but this helped easy the sorrow: https://archiveofourown.org/works/15406506 (only click if you’ve finished the book!!!)

fun fact: i was once one of the biggest fanfiction writers in a fandom, so this book hit really close to home.
it's a really well-done story about the creator of one of the biggest webcomics in the world. it's a love letter to introverts, online friendships, and fandom. i could really see myself in Eliza—the isolation in high school, finding refuge in online communities, the anxiety of juggling both lives, the panic attacks that come when someone finds you out. been there, done that, got the trauma t-shirt.
also, the snippets we got from the webcomic really made me want to read it. the descriptions were just lovely.

just realised i never added this to my read shelf. i must've read it in 2016? 2017?
anyway. i don't remember anything other than being bored. sorry.

this was an extremely interesting collection of facts and researches that explores how cis women—strong emphasis on the cis part—have been viewed by scientists throughout the years. i particularly enjoyed the bits when the author reported how animal behaviour in the wild is representative of gender bias.
but there is a glaring oversight in this book, and it is the almost complete erasure of trans men and women in the author’s research. it simply isn’t acceptable that a book published in 2017—a book whose main purpose is to “rewrite history” re: cismisogyny in the science fields—only has space for a superficial mention of transgender people. the topic is lumped together with anecdotes of intersex children and that’s about it. this bothered me immensely from the very first chapter.
