2.5 stars.
the good: all characters are really well-developed. there are great discussions about the concept of virginity and sexual freedom. and this book pretty much burns heteronormativity to the fucking ground. this is the first time i’ve read a book with an all-round queer cast and i loved that.
the not-so-good: i’m still confused about many, many things. i guess that’s why there are going to be sequels lol or maybe i missed something because i skimmed all of the sex scenes, with leads us to—
the bad: sex sex sex these people only think about sex all the time and it was just too much for me. definitely a case of me the asexual trying—again—to read erotica and—again—not getting it. but i wanted to mention it, because that’s what weighted the most on my rating. if sex doesn’t bother you, consider my rating bumped up to 4 stars.
i might pick up the second book, only because i’m too damn curious about what happened between two of the characters. i need to know.

this book was weird and wonderful.
i want to tattoo it in its entirety on my forehead.

there will not come a darkness.
at least not for now.
i don’t know how to say this without sounding like a bloodthirsty assassin-for-hire, but i wish this book was bloodier and harsher and just darker in general. not that it isn’t dark. i just wanted... more.
but i did enjoy it. it’s a solid debut. the magic system is really cool. i could do without the instalove, but the other relationship more than made up for that. and i LOVE that two of the main characters don’t even have a love interest. i'm disappointed, but only because i expected something else. more, please!
also: please listen to the audiobook. the narrator is fabulous. i want to listen to every book he’s ever narrated. even if it’s horror. even if it’s—*shudders*—economics. i rounded up my rating exclusively for him.

this isn't a war book. not in way we normally see in YA fiction, in which an ordinary girl saves the world.
it is, though, about war. about war, and sacrifices, and friendship, and reality, and loss.
the good:
- NO ROMANCE
- DID YOU HEAR ME SAY NO ROMANCE?
- THIS BOOK HAS NO ROMANCE
- disability rep which i can't judge properly, but seemed really well-done
- the magic system is incredibly creative
- russian setting inspired by the soviet union
- enemies-to-lovers-except-they-just-become-friends
- all-female pilot squad! they fly living metal! female empowerment! sorority bonding!
- FEMINIST AF
the bad:
- the writing is awkward at times
- the ending was too abrupt for me
- the magic system still confuses me
i expected more, i'll admit, but it's still a really fucking solid debut.

reread #6
i'm rereading the whole series in preparation for [b:Call Down the Hawk|31373184|Call Down the Hawk (Dreamer, #1)|Maggie Stiefvater|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1550860945l/31373184._SY75_.jpg|52062040], and i'm listening to the audiobooks. i really recommend them. the narrator makes the story sound quite spooky and creepy, which is just perfect for this time of the year.

hello my name is Caroline and my middle name is Disappointed
it’s not that this book is too dark (though it is). it’s not that this book is too violent (though it is). it’s not even that this book is too grim and dreary (though it really, really is).
this book’s worst sin?
it’s. so. damn. boring.
fair warning: check the triggers before reading. it’s really, really dark.

well this was delightful.
crier is such a disaster lesbian, i love her.
it would have been 5 stars EXCEPT it was a bit too much of instalove from one side of the pairing and i could do without that. apart from that, ALL THE STARS. when’s book two coming out?
