After the travesty of Final Girl, it was so nice to read something by Grady Hendrix that felt similar to The Southern Book Club's Guide To Slaying Vampires and My Best Friend's Exorcism. This was so much more creepier than I thought it would be, haunted puppets and dolls? My actual nightmare. And the thing with the needle and the circular saw? That had me hyperventilating, it was so disturbing. The ending had me in tears, grief was portrayed so well here.
It's crazy how tight of a chokehold this book had me in. I fell in love with Alaska, Wren, Agnes, and Jonah immediately - even though Jonah was kind of a dick. The cancer storyline had me in shambles, I recently lost my father, and this was harder to read. However, I absolutely loved where Calla and Wren ended up, even if the ending had me sobbing. The romance in this had a new beginning feel to it as well and it was so refreshing.
I think I found my new favorite Emily Henry book! Ahhh, I loved the storyline in this one! Harriet and Wyn keeping a secret from their friends but the whole time I felt the sparks between them that were still there. Sabrina was absolutely fucking annoying but the rest of the friend group was so good and I loved the banter and personalities. Going back to Harriet and Wyn, I absolutely LOVED their ending.
Uncle Earl and Simon are the best characters and you can't convince me otherwise. Truthfully, I only liked Kara when she would banter with the other two, otherwise, she was a pretty boring main character. I imagined the museum in my head and I'm sorry, I don't think I could live in a museum with creepy ass taxidermy. It gave me the ick the entire time. The other dimensions (???) were horrifying and kids hands in bus seats?? Weird boat man?? The willow trees?? I will never look at bus seats, boats, or willow trees without being scared ever again.
I definitely felt sorry for Violet and I 100% support Dear Sweetie going rogue, her ex husband deserved to be dragged publicly. That man and his mom are so lucky our girl didn't do worse. That aside, Violet was super annoying and I didn't buy into her romance with the firefighter, it just felt too soon. It was cute and gave me the fuzzies, it just wasn't believable. I ate this story up though. 3.5 stars!
Mimi is the most lovable and clever character! This story was sweet, fun, and even a little mysterious! I loved the mix of Shakespeare, fae, and baking that made this a yummy summer read. I can't get over how cozy and whimsy this is as well, the vibes were magical and impeccable. Easily a 3.75 star read for me!
The author did an amazing job with the characters and creating this world. The world gives such whimsical and cozy vibes, it was super easy to get sucked into the story.
Rachel was so brave for the decision that she made, she left an abusive situation and good on her. I love that we have the found family trope here as well. This was a beautiful story about freedom and love with a touch of whimsy. I didn't like, however, that the book would switch from first person to third person, it really threw me off.
