The Reinvention of the Rose

Christina C. Jones

I was just really bored and didn’t care about the love interest because we didn’t get his pov. But I’m going to read another CCJ book soon, so hopefully I’ll like it better🤞🏽

This was so adorable and funny! Loved the characters, individually and together. They had really great chemistry and their individual personalities really shined. They’re one of my new favorite couples. I’ll definitely be reading more books by Virgo Girl!

Inheriting a new house in a new city sounded like the perfect new start for Donna, but she got lonely. What better solution than to get a roommate? Her and her new roommate, Joshua, hit it it off, until Donna starts to notice little things. What is that stench coming from his room? And why does he already have a key to the side door of her house? She invited him in, now she can’t get him out.

This book had a lot of promise. The synopsis hooked me and I just had to find out what was going to happen. But I’m sad to say that I don’t have any positive things to say about this book.

Firstly, I feel like the writer took a lot of time trying to develop the main character, but she wasn’t likable. I think that was purposeful, however, if she wasn’t likable, why not use her unlikable-ness to further the story in some way? She was just annoying. My main problem with this book though is that the roommate WAS NOT SCARY! He was mean, but I was not scared of him. Anybody seen that episode of Friends where Ben Stiller is Rachel’s new boyfriend and every time Rach leaves the room, he starts being mean and cussing people out? That’s who Joshua reminded me of. If Donna’s boyfriend had just beat Joshua up one good time, then he would’ve left Donna alone. This whole story also felt drawn out and repetitive. This could’ve been over AT LEAST 100 pages earlier because all Donna had to do was set boundaries early in the situation. And another thing, there were no twists. Everything that could’ve been considered “a twist” was given to you on a silver platter very early in the book. All of my more intricate theories were better than what actually was “revealed”.

This book had promise, but it just didn’t feel very thrilling to me. If I was in the situation, I could’ve just beat Joshua up, by myself, and he would’ve left me alone.

Thank you Joffe Books and NetGalley for this arc. All opinions are my own.

This book let me know that I really like vacation romances! It’s one of my new favorite tropes. I really liked Jordyn, she reminded me a lot of myself. It took me a VERY long time to warm up to Amir though. I hated him for most of the book. The cocky, charming guy will never be my type. And he was constantly downing other women to up Jordyn. He was always saying stuff like “Jordyn’s body is real unlike them other fake females” or “All these other girls too loud and extra, Jordyn is laid back and chill”. Like if the other women you dated were like that then it’s because you picked them🙄 I didn’t start being okay with him till about 70% in the book. He’s not someone I would pick for myself, but Amir and Jordyn worked really well together, so I did root for their relationship. I’ll definitely be picking up more Tay Mo’Nae books.

I had mixed feelings about this one. I always love Black witches and I really enjoyed seeing so many paranormal identities like vampires, werewolves, fae, etc. I also thought it had a good story and really good pacing. It started out good and never got boring. But what I didn’t like was the characters! I hated 2 out of 3 sisters, and the other sister I just felt very indifferent about. They were all so immature. None of them acted 25. I would’ve thought that this was a young adult novel if not for all the graphic sex scenes😂 And I didn’t care about any of the love interests/side characters either. There was also a subplot that made me uncomfortable. There were romantic feelings between one of the sisters and an immortal who she refers to as an ancestor. I REALLY hope and pray that she doesn’t mean the he is HER ancestor because I don’t care how old he is, it’s still very nasty to sleep with a descendant of his family. I hope ancestor was just used as a term of respect, similar to the word elder, and that it was not a familial romance.

I think I’ll give book 2 a chance because I like the way this book ended and would like to know where the story goes. And I’ll hope for better character development🤞🏽 Also since I liked the writing style, I will be picking up more books by the author! I already want a few of her other books👀

This is the funniest book I’ve ever read! It had me cracking up throughout the whole thing. Yana and Jelly are my favorite best friend duo of all time. I need a friend like Jelly! I never got bored with this book because there was always another layer of drama being added. I personally don’t think Rex was worth the trouble but ayy🤷🏽‍♀️ This book was hilarious with crazy characters and a whole lotta drama. If you’re thinking about buying this book, get it now!!

The Hookup Plan

Farrah Rochon

DID NOT FINISH: 47%

Pediatric surgeon, London Kelley, needs to de-stress. Taking her friends advice, London finds herself hooking up with her highschool rival, Drew Sullivan. He was the perfect choice since he was only in town for their highschool reunion and she’ll never have to see him again. At least, that’s what she thought, until she runs into him at the hospital she works in and finds out that he’ll be deciding if her beloved hospital gets to stay open. London realizes that she’s sleeping with the enemy, but will her and her enemy fall for each other?

I was very nervous when I picked this book up because I have very conflicting thoughts about the other two books in the series. I DNFed the first book, but I loved the second book so much and it’s one of my favorite romance novels of all time. So I couldn’t wait to see what this book had in store for me. But I’m sad to say that I also DNFed this book.

First I want to start with what I liked about this book and that was the characters. London and Drew were both very interesting characters. Drew could’ve been a great love interest and the two of them could’ve worked really well together. Their romance had so much potential, but the problem was that this book didn’t have enough romance!

I was almost halfway into the book and yet, nothing of substance had happened between them outside of their hookups. This book is heavy on their work situation and they have no scenes together outside of that. And because of that I felt no chemistry between them. It felt like the hospital plot was the main plot and the hookups were an almost nonexistent subplot. I personally want to be a doctor and even I found the amount of hospital scenes boring! We don’t see many of the hookups, which I’m happy about since I’m not a person who enjoys smut, but there weren’t any scenes of them talking after hookups and getting to know each other, or going out to eat together after hookups, or any scenes of substance at all outside of the work environment. I’m very disappointed that this book had such little romance.

I’m still happy that I read this series and I definitely plan on reading more books by Farrah Rochon soon since I loved the second book in the series so much!

Thank you NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publsihing) for this arc. All opinions are my own.

I had no idea what to expect when I started this book, but I’m pleasantly surprised! I really enjoyed it and didn’t want to put it down! My only complaint was that there were so many typos. But if you like fast paced and thrilling reads then pick this one up! Can’t wait to read Queenie next.
