Inheriting a new house in a new city sounded like the perfect new start for Donna, but she got lonely. What better solution than to get a roommate? Her and her new roommate, Joshua, hit it it off, until Donna starts to notice little things. What is that stench coming from his room? And why does he already have a key to the side door of her house? She invited him in, now she can’t get him out.
This book had a lot of promise. The synopsis hooked me and I just had to find out what was going to happen. But I’m sad to say that I don’t have any positive things to say about this book.
Firstly, I feel like the writer took a lot of time trying to develop the main character, but she wasn’t likable. I think that was purposeful, however, if she wasn’t likable, why not use her unlikable-ness to further the story in some way? She was just annoying. My main problem with this book though is that the roommate WAS NOT SCARY! He was mean, but I was not scared of him. Anybody seen that episode of Friends where Ben Stiller is Rachel’s new boyfriend and every time Rach leaves the room, he starts being mean and cussing people out? That’s who Joshua reminded me of. If Donna’s boyfriend had just beat Joshua up one good time, then he would’ve left Donna alone. This whole story also felt drawn out and repetitive. This could’ve been over AT LEAST 100 pages earlier because all Donna had to do was set boundaries early in the situation. And another thing, there were no twists. Everything that could’ve been considered “a twist” was given to you on a silver platter very early in the book. All of my more intricate theories were better than what actually was “revealed”.
This book had promise, but it just didn’t feel very thrilling to me. If I was in the situation, I could’ve just beat Joshua up, by myself, and he would’ve left me alone.
Thank you Joffe Books and NetGalley for this arc. All opinions are my own.
