AHEM, yes I'm giving this 5 stars with my whole chest. What about it?
Ya’ll…YA’LL. This book was so good. I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t expect much from it and so I decided to grab the audiobook to give myself the best chance at enjoyment. I’m so glad I did. I think I would’ve enjoyed this book even without the audiobook because the physical book is formatted in interviews and whatnot as well, but that audiobook was AMAZING! I found myself not wanting to do one without the other. I literally had the book open and following along as I listened because I needed to hear it, but also I needed to see the different formats on the page. I was sucked in and finished it quicker than I expected. Pip has decided to use her capstone project to solve a 5 year old murder. Everyone is so sure that Sal killed his girlfriend Andie. Everyone except for Pip and Sal’s younger brother Ravi. Pip finds herself going down a rabbit hole, complete with a murderboard, attempting to find out the truth and ends up putting herself in more danger than she anticipated. I thought this was amazing, though I will say trigger warning for an unnecessary animal harm/death.

Let me tell ya'll something. Hide and Seeker is that girl, will always be that girl and could never not be that girl okay! This book was AMAZING.
Anyone who says that Middle Grade books are boring or don’t offer any substance doesn’t have taste. Listen, you don’t have to like an age group of books that aren’t meant for you. That’s fine. But don’t sit up here and say that Middle Grades don’t have flavor when this masterpiece exists. This book creeped me out more than some adult horrors I’ve read AND covered social issues at the same time. THE TALENT! In this book we follow Justin as he is grieving the death of his mother and dealing with his best friend returning after going missing one year ago. An innocent game of hide and seek turns out to be not so innocent and suddenly Justin and his friends are faced with a monster trying to steal their souls all because of a game! This book dealt with grief, anxiety, loneliness, family, mental health, and even the politics of the kidnapping of Black children and the lack of care society and the police show in those cases. And it doesn’t just gloss over those things, it faces them head on and makes it part of the overall plot. Like I said, a masterpiece. I wanted to protect these babies and fight along side them the whole time.

The was definitely a cute and quick mystery read. It was spicy and then BOOM here comes the murder. I think I'll definitely be picking up other books by this author.
Y’all. What in the world. All I’m going to say for now is that this book gave me what I wanted from Turn of the Key and didn’t get. I loved it
This book ruined all other books for me. I’m not taking any criticisms at this time. Thanks
Yeah no rating from me. I remember loving this book in middle school which is why I got nostalgic and decided to re-read but holy hell was this cringey AF. The fake AAVE, the white bit with dreads, the pain in the ass main character. I just...whew no thanks. The best thing about this was I got to cackle at the cringe this time around and I read it in under 4 hours.
We meet William during a basketball game in his neighborhood. During the game, shots ring out and his brother Shawn is shot and killed. For the rest of the graphic novel, we follow William on his journey coming to grips with his brother's death, the gun violence in his neighborhood and whether or not he should seek revenge for what has happened. All of this takes place on the elevator ride from his apartment to the ground floor, the long way down, and along the way he is confronted by visions of his past to help him decide what to do.
This was so powerful. Gun violence is something that effects so many people, but especially the Black community. Too often we're caught up in "The Rules": don't snitch, Black men don't cry, get revenge for you and yours. Violence leads to more violence and suddenly things have gotten so out of hand that innocent lives are being claimed and there seems to be no one is able to stop it. All of that is tackled in this book and to say that it's an emotional read is an understatement. I truly enjoyed it and encourage everyone to give it a read.
