This book covers some hard topics: suicide and depression.
Cody's best friend sends her an email, explaining that she's committed suicide and it's something she has thought about for a long time. The book covers how she is trying to come to terms with this. She's been her best friend forever and she feels responsible. How did she not see this? How did she not know?!
So, she starts to dig because she isn't quite ready to let go. She can't comprehend that her best friend decided to end her life. Even thinking that someone has a hand in her death. She ends up finding things that she never knew about.
I liked and didn't like this book. I would have liked it more if it wasn't for the love interest. I mean, really... turning a bad boy good.. I just didn't buy it. It kind of ruined some of the actual plot for me. It takes away from what's really going on. The light definitely needed to be shown on the issues here, not the love interest.
It was a really fast read, I got through it in one day. I just didn't love it. I felt like it was a bit all over the place. I think where she really lost me was the road trip. Father, going after someone on her own and losing her virginity. It was just a little unreal and a little strange.
So, overall, this was just a so-so book for me.

I've been wanting to read this book for a long time now. I just didn't get around to it and then someone returned it at work (the library) and I was like okay, it's time. I brought it home and decided to put everything else on hold and read it. I read through this pretty fast and I loved it.
It's kind of a twist on the Cinderella story. It's set in New Beijing and it's a mix of humans and androids. From space, another type of people called lunar. There's also a deadly plague that is killing off the population. Cinder is a well known mechanic and a cyborg. She doesn't really know much about her past since she can't remember anything before the age of 11. She lives with her stepmother (who hates her) and two stepsisters. Unlike the Cinderella story, one of the stepsisters is sweet and her and Cinder love each other. Cinder is living a normal-ish life until the Prince stops at her table at the market to ask for her assistance. She falls for him and then things start to unwind for her as she's finding out more about herself than she ever knew.
That's all I'm going to say. I know some of it sounds weird but it's really good. I can't wait to get my hands on the second book, Scarlet. Although, there is a wait at the library. I know there will be two more books in the next year and a half so that's exciting. I just hope she can stick to her writing and deliver on the next 3 books!

I want to start by saying that I was really looking forward to this book. I think that I'm in the minority that didn't love it. It was just so-so for me.
Over the years, I've loved many of her books. She's got some absolutely emotional, amazing books that you cannot forget. One of them, my all time favorite book (Winter Garden). I feel like that makes my expectations really high. Unfortunately, this book just did not do it for me. I just kept hoping and hoping for it to just grab me and not let go.
One of my biggest issues with this book is the way it flows. So, the beginning of the book starts off really slow and has a lot of content BUT the last 1/3 of the book is really rushed and there's so many things going on, it feels a bit all over the place.
We get a great background of the Allbright family and their time in Alaska. They almost made the appeal of a simple life, quite compelling. Don't worry, that didn't last long. There's no way this city girl could make it in that life. Anyways, I'm not sure what I had more issue with. How things went down or how a ton of huge events happened in the end and I couldn't quite keep up. Some of the things just seemed really out there and the court stuff at the end was really just stupid. I'm sorry, what was the point.
Now, this book wasn't all bad. I did love Leni and how she grew as a person. Her love for Matthew is inspiring. I loved how Cora and Leni reconnected with the grandparents. It goes to show, it's never too late. I also liked that Hannah shed a light on Vets. It's something that's not really talked about and I think it should be. Being in war and coming home and trying to just pick up where they left off, is not real.
Overall, this book is just okay. I'm still a huge fan, this just wasn't one of my favorite by her.

I love Anna Faris!
I got through this book really quickly. It was really funny and interesting. Have you ever listened to her podcasts?! I love them and this just felt like a longer episode.
You really get to know a lot more about her and her relationships. She felt really honest and was very humble. Her little bits of advice were hilarious. This also had a lot of Chris Pratt in here. I mean, he was a big part of her life and they have a kid together. I loved the fact that she did not shine him in any dark way. It was light and fun.
She did a great job in the whole book from going from funny to very personal. I read a lot of memoirs but this one felt a little different to me. I think it was because it just felt like a long podcast. Did I mention that I love those?!
I was a bit disappointed in the fact that there was nothing about their split though.

Okay, I don't even know where to start. This book was AMAZING! I intended to start reading it, read for an hour, then get on with my household tasks for the day. Well, none of those household tasks were done today. I could not put this down. I really like some of Holly Black's other books. I was excited when I saw she was coming out with a new one. I put it on hold at the library and got it. I didn't know anything about it. Also, I will be purchasing- that's some high praise there. :)
I will try my best to make my thoughts coherent. My mind is blown and my emotions AHHHH!
A little about this book:
Jade is a young girl, who witnesses her parents murder. She is then taken by that murderer. We jump to 10 years later. She's living with the Fae but being constantly being insulted about her human traits. All is she wants is power and to stop feeling like she's at the bottom of the totem pole. She then gets pulled into a very dangerous game and all their lives are on the line.
This writing alone in this book was amazing. Holly Black has an amazing way with words. She makes you feel all these emotions and then blows your mind.
The characters are amazing. They are all flawed, which is refreshing. One of the things that I found very intriguing was how the girls (minus Viv) learned to think of their parents murdered as their father figure. Even my husband was like wait... are we supposed to like him? I was like... well it's complicated. Haha! It just makes you question everything.
The characters all really grow too, especially Jude. She is strong willed and doesn't take crap from anyone. She really reminds me of Aelin from Throne of Glass and I LOVE her.
I honestly CANNOT wait for book 2. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves YA, fantasy, Fae or just a well written book!

First, I want to say thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a PDF of this book. First, I would like to say that it was not what I was expecting. I would say this is more of an art book than hand lettering. It has some cool history of some fonts/letters but there's really not much on "how to" for the project aspect of this book. There's not much of that. So if you are beginner, definitely stay clear of this book. It will overwhelm and not help you at all. If you are an advanced artist, this would probably be cool for you. A good way to embellish your hand lettering as is. It's cool looking but I wouldn't find it relevant to me because I need more practice and tips.

I started this book on Wednesday night and spent my whole day off Thursday reading. I am so glad that I kept up with this series because I'm loving it.
In this book, we start off with Celaena making her journey to Wendlyn. She is heartbroken and truly lost. She ends up getting "captured" by Rowen and taken to her evil aunt. She makes a bargain with her, to train with Rowen to gain information. Most of the book ends up though her whole process, while getting pieces of what is going in back in Ardalan with Chaol and Dorian. There's a lot of evil, lies, plots and crazy happening in this book. You get a lot of information about many different aspects but at the same time things are coming together.
The writing is just outstanding in this whole series. Maas does an amazing job doing different points of view throughout this series. There's a lot of times that I'm not fond of reading all the different perspectives of characters. It can drag out too much and bore me a little. She does not do this here. She does a great job, incorporating a lot of opinions and thoughts, while keeping the plot moving. You don't get much of a retelling, more of how they are moving forward and vital information. You get to see how all the pieces are moving, since all the characters are a bit scattered.
She has a way with words too. You can just feel what these characters are going through and feeling. Especially, Celaena and her dealing with her heartbreak and past. You can also picture everything she's writing, as if you are seeing it for yourself.
We already have a lot of characters but she adds more in this book. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about Manon and her story but I feel like it's going to come together in an epic way. I really got into their perspective and how they do things. It was a bit separated from the books actual plot but I know that it will come together later. I think it's basically to give us a peek into the witches side of this whole war/world. It gives us some good information! I really loved Manon's character by the time we got to the end of the book.
Oh, how I love Rowan. Seriously, he might be my favorite out of all the male characters. He is tough and relentless. Although, you definitely see his other side when it comes to Celaena. They really have the perfect connection and are so similar. They way things come together for them was a bit predictable but I'm not mad about it. It's great! I cannot wait to see what happens in the future with them.
I thought that Maas did a wonderful job with Celaena's character in the second book and having her character grow. Boy, did she blow that out of the water in this book. She has Celaena grow into a true warrior/assassin/queen. She embraces her past and learns to deal with it. She makes it part of her and it just takes her to the next level. I love how she's fighting this constant battle of her past/present/future. She's constantly trying to hurt herself and not care about her life because she's trying to atone for the bad things she has done. She doesn't feel she deserves to be queen because she has done nothing for her people in 10 years. She is fighting this constant battle within herself and Maas does a great job making you feel it too.
This book doesn't have much in the romance sense but that's okay. There is so many other things going on, you don't have much time to miss it. I'm sure we will get a lot more in the next book. I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to start the next one.

Wow! This book blew me away!
Okay, I totally understand why people have a love for this series. I guess, I shouldn’t say that just yet, with two more books to go. The reason being, this book was fantastic! I was so let down by the first book because it was just slow and the plot didn’t really pull me in. Not the case for this one, at all.
The plot is amazing. There is so much going on that it’s a wild ride. You really just get sucked in and it’s been a while, since that’s happened with a book. I devoured this book in a short time. There is so much character development, plot development and the writing was fantastic. I will admit, this book does not feel like a YA. It’s pretty dark at times and things are described very detail, especially the violence. It didn’t’ take anything away from me. It’s just a warning, if you have teens reading this series. There was so much more magic and power. The way that Celaena’s character developed was beautiful to see. She’s much more powerful and there is so much more depth there.
It wasn’t just Celaena’s character either. We get so much more from all of them! They are all making mistakes and trying to learn from them. Gosh, Maas, did an amazing job with the relationships in this book. I love how she showed us vulnerability from all the characters. They are not perfect but they are trying their hardest. So much more intense and much more tangled. We not only read but understand how they are feeling toward each other. I love how there is no more love triangle. As a reader, you know exactly who is she is in love with. There is so much deception, secrets and lies. They are all unraveling and it’s becoming so interesting. I honestly, cannot wait to dive into the next book.
I'm so surprised that this book was not predictable. I didn't really know what was going to happen most of the time. I didn't expect that twist either, what a gut puncher! I can't wait to see how Maas works out all these relationships in the next book. I'm totally joining in all they hype! I hope the rest don't disappoint!
