I Was Here
by Gayle Forman
This book covers some hard topics: suicide and depression.
Cody's best friend sends her an email, explaining that she's committed suicide and it's something she has thought about for a long time. The book covers how she is trying to come to terms with this. She's been her best friend forever and she feels responsible. How did she not see this? How did she not know?!
So, she starts to dig because she isn't quite ready to let go. She can't comprehend that her best friend decided to end her life. Even thinking that someone has a hand in her death. She ends up finding things that she never knew about.
I liked and didn't like this book. I would have liked it more if it wasn't for the love interest. I mean, really... turning a bad boy good.. I just didn't buy it. It kind of ruined some of the actual plot for me. It takes away from what's really going on. The light definitely needed to be shown on the issues here, not the love interest.
It was a really fast read, I got through it in one day. I just didn't love it. I felt like it was a bit all over the place. I think where she really lost me was the road trip. Father, going after someone on her own and losing her virginity. It was just a little unreal and a little strange.
So, overall, this was just a so-so book for me.
