I gotta admit that this book didn’t work for me. I couldn’t get a grip on one of the characters, and he unfortunately also lacked a backbone when it came to his ex husband, which really annoyed me in the end. There was a lot of telling instead of showing which makes sense, considering it’s a shorter book, but it did lead to me feeling bored and skimming quite a bit.
Sweet and simple concept, but without connecting to the characters it didn’t work for me.

Heath called out, “Fine, you made your point, Santa!” Then tipped back his head and stuck out his tongue to eat snow, only for Tristan to kiss him. Heath smiled against his mouth.
A cute little forced proximity christmas book. I was super excited about it early on because it started out a little sad with characters being put through the emotional wringer, and I’m a sucker for sad characters. And although it would be strange if a christmas romance was sad from start to finish, I didn’t love how the switch from downtrodden and sad MCs to OTT cheery and constant banter happened so fast. Sometimes I want dialogue that *isn’t* super witty and full of jokes, you know? Barbara does exactly that so well and the flow of the dialogue and the general humor is a big reason why I love her books so much, but it can be a bit much at times.
Heath was now on top of Tristan, holding his face, rubbing his thumbs down the line of his jaw and still kissing him as if something awful would happen if he stopped.
Overall though, the concept was fun. *My* first reaction to unexpectedly finding a strange man in the house might not be ‘let’s fuck’, but if it works for them, go for it, lol.

He’d forgotten what the stages of grief were but he was self-indulgently floundering through most of them at the same time. He was all for efficiency.
Heath liked cats but he preferred ones that didn’t hiss at him when he hadn’t even done anything.

I want warm skin pressed against mine at night. I want to dig my fingertips into muscle and hear the sounds of someone unraveling because of my touch. I want to see that look in their eyes that lets me know I’m seen, I’m heard, I’m loved. Goddamn it, I want love.

Gosh, Emmy is a really good writer, and I enjoyed this story a whole heckuva lot. It was hell trying to pick quotes for this review because I highlighted about half the damn book. Ashley (love this name for men) and Jackson were both sweethearts and kind people, but wonderfully distinct characters.
His kiss is brutal, and I’d almost think it angry if I couldn’t feel the desperation behind every movement.
Things I wanted to do while reading this:
- eat food with twenty ranchers
- visit a petting zoo
- play with baby goats
- drink whiskey (I don’t even like whiskey)
- ride a… horse
- try rice pudding
I must admit this was maybe a tad too low on angst for my current moods, but it was a wonderful story about adult men who communicated well throughout, and that’s very refreshing. Jackson was hurt quite badly by his ex, and although it is mentioned a few times it really didn’t feel like it affected him.
Ashley might not save a horse, but he does ride a cowboy, and let’s be honest, that’s why we’re reading this.

When I can finally manage a breath, I murmur his name, a small, “Jack,” stolen from my lips like the breath he’s stolen from my lungs.

“Meow.” Lachlan understood Kit perfectly. Kit sat on Lachlan’s lap, paws on the table, facing everyone. And more importantly, the chicken. “Wait just a little longer,” Lachlan whispered. “Meow,” Kit meowed woefully. How long until he could eat? How long was he meant to suffer? He’d already waited forever!

This was super duper cute and I got sucked into the story quickly. There is something about a shifter stuck in their animal form that I love. 10/10 microtrope for sure. A friend told me they cried a lot while reading this and I was quite far into the story and thought ‘this isn’t even sad?’, and then I cried actual buckets shortly after, lol. A short book but it had a cool premise, lots of cute moments, some steam, etc. I really enjoyed it.
Don’t worry about the christmas theme and title. There’s barely anything about christmas in the story, so it can be enjoyed year round.

Kit had had enough. Hissing, Kit darted between them, showing Tony his teeth and flattening his ears. “Whoa!” Tony’s eyes widened. He took several steps back on his hoofed feet. “What in the world—” Kit prowled after Tony, still hissing. The faun stumbled. “Kit! What’s gotten into you?” Lachlan grabbed Kit around the waist and lifted him into his arms. Kit rubbed his cheeks, lips, and chin all over Lachlan, marking his witch with his scent. Mine. He glared at Tony.
Lachlan needs me. He’s hurting. I need to soothe him. But Lachlan was hurting because of Kit. And so Kit did not know what to do.

“Boys,” Tomas called in a no-nonsense voice, and Mason couldn’t help it. He sank his teeth into his bottom lip and grinned at Vinnie. “Don’t, Mase,” Vinnie said. “I don’t want you getting your hopes up.” “Too late,” Mason whispered.
This book started so well and had me hooked and feeling emotional, and I ended up being pretty disappointed, which is a massive shame. I really wanted to love everything about Tomas, Vinnie and Mason. It’s been a while since I finished it now, but what I remember struggling with the most is that Vinnie and Mason’s relationship is never explained or spelled out. They’ve been a couple (sort of?) in the past, but after their fight in the beginning of the book and subsequently getting together with Tomas as a poly throuple, we don’t learn what their new dynamic is. They have no sexual contact after getting with Tomas. Only a kiss on the cheek. I genuinely had no idea if they were still a couple or not. They also never have any threesomes on page, but it’s hinted at in the epilogue, only to be skipped entirely. Quite frustrating.
I couldn’t really get a grip on their dynamic and that really bled into the rest of the story. It definitely had its good parts and kept me reading, but I’ve loved the series a lot and wanted this one to be really good.

Behind me, Simon purred. The kitty cat liked what he saw. Then he abruptly stopped, coughing as if to cover up his reaction. But it was too late, I’d already heard.
This was mostly cute but not my favorite in the series. I have been in a rough reading slump too so I’m sure that affected my enjoyment, but I felt the story dragged/was boring. I didn’t feel like either character was very clear.
We got a few moments with the MCs in their shifted form eventually, but I did get a little frustrated with the lack of time spent shifted.
I am still excited about the next book in the series and I enjoy the found family and small town vibes. The writing is good too. I just think I need some more angst and things happening at the moment.

I’d hyperventilated so severely the paramedics rushed over, put a paper bag over my mouth, and told me to breathe slowly. For the record, holding a paper bag over a dragon’s mouth when they’re upset is a shitty plan, because then there was a fire to deal with on top of everything else.

“Shy doesn't always equal submissive, Ez.”
I feel like such a silly fangirl every time I review a Jay Leigh book, but man, their writing just works for me so well. Until now I’ve only read this author’s more suspenseful and action-y books, so this was my first contemporary. I can confirm that I enjoyed this just as much (although I’ll always be a hoe for suspense).
This little book had a bit of everything, and it surprised the heck out of me when it made me cry. There’s something about a young single dad who is doing his very best to give his child the world while struggling through work, school and some anxiety that tugged on my heartstrings hard. I just wanted to give him a massive hug.
There’s plenty of small-town charm, christmas cuteness without being overwhelmingly Santa-in-your-face, and a kid who will make you smile.
“Oliver Branson, you can't possibly be this hopeless. Please tell me you actually know how to flirt?” I scoffed so hard, I started coughing as the chilly air hit the back of my throat.
There’s also a mix of fast feelings and push and pull, which sounds mental, but it worked because it felt genuine and real for these character. They cared about each other so much, but that doesn’t always mean it’s easy or straightforward.
Can highly recommend this sweet little book.

I was a hot mess on a good day. Evidently, in front of gorgeous men in dance tights, I turned into a full scale spicy disaster.
I wanted him in ways that overwhelmed me, but my mind couldn't reconcile being a father and a partner at the same time. I'd never known anything more than being a parent and the concept of trying to add more to that left me panicking.

Jaime’s face pinched into a pout, and he made the most adorable little huff sound, which only made Finn laugh even harder. Finally, he calmed down enough to speak. “Don’t give me that face, baby. It’s a damned weapon and I’ve done nothing to deserve it.”
This was a lovely story and a good debut novel. I especially loved the first half, as it tugged on my heartstrings a few times and really just hit the spot for a lot of the things and tropes I enjoy, even being a sort of second chance romance. It was a very entertaining story and I'll be looking forward to seeing what the author writes in the future. This one was set up well for future plot and some interesting side characters. It lost me a little bit at times in the second half, but it's hard to tell if that's because of my book slump or not.
It wasn't perfect, but I expect some of the things that made me scratch my head will be cleaned up in future books, and editing experience will help. I feel pretty confident I read the word 'hiccup' more times in this book than I have read in every other romance book combined, and not a single character had the hiccups once, lol.
All non-joky jokes aside, it was entertaining, and it made me melt from cuteness a few times, especially when the big, bad wolf started to purr.
I also wish to never read the word ‘splashed’ in relation to someone blowing a load inside someone else, ever again. Lol.

I’m so goddamn in love with this series and all of the characters, it’s crazy. Ait, let me set the scene (go grab a snack, this might take a moment).
April 29th, 2023, I finished book one of this series, Whisper into the Night, for the first time. I was instantly in love and it landed on my favorites of the year immediately. Not long after that I was lucky enough to get a spot on Jay Leigh’s ARC team. I have been equally excited for every subsequent book released in the series and have spammed my friends with quotes and highlights, even though they’ve never read any of the books. If I like it, y’all will too, damnit. Lol. Anyway, this series is pretty much all of my favorite things combined, and it felt like finding the Holy Grail. It certainly helps that Jay Leigh is just a cool person. And then *DUN DUN DUN*
Imagine my horror when I spotted the tropes ‘second chance’ and ‘relationship in crisis’ for this book. Theo and Connor, the couple from book 1, my beloved favorite boys, were gonna have problems, and I just about died. I’m not even slightly exaggerating when I tell you I lost sleep over this several weeks before Jay ever even sent out the ARCs. I had a nightmare about it, and I made my friends comfort me, lol. Let’s just say I bonded with these characters hardcore and the thought of them struggling hurt so bad. *Not* reading the book wasn’t even an option, as I’m so deeply invested in the overarching plot, and I love the other POV characters just as much. Jay Leigh talked me off the ledge, and I somehow found the strength to start the book. You know what happened? I fucking loved it. The tears starting falling at 1% into the book. It broke my heart, but it was so worth it.
You might wanna call me dramatic, and you’d be so right, lol, but not a lie in sight. Six POV characters, and not a single thing was missing. The way this author has managed to weave this story and plot together is incredible. I think I’ve mentioned this before (probably many times), but my favorite part of these books is how the different POVs allows us to really see how multifaceted and complex every single character is. To see them be husband/boyfriend/girlfriend; coworker; father; brother; friend, and to have all of these roles and dynamics feel true to the character? I don’t think I’m explaining it very well, but it impresses me to no end.
Now, even though we have a lot of different characters getting time on page, the romantic focus is on Theo and Connor. Like I mentioned, these guys are struggling for a chunk of the book. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that these boys are meant to be, but trauma, grief, survivor’s guilt, suddenly parenting two children and so much more will put a strain on a relationship. Thankfully they have a strong wish to make things work, they have amazing friends that help and encourage them, and they go to therapy both alone and together. If you know me outside of Goodreads, chances are you’ve heard me (loudly) say how much I dislike second chance romance, but I loved this so much (to be fair it’s like Second Chance Lite, but still). Sorcery, I tell you.
We got some crazy unexpected revelations in the thriller mystery situation, and I can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens. It’s like everyone, characters and readers alike, took a big breath of relief at the end of this book, but we’re also just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Personally, as someone who feels giddy with happiness when there’s mortal peril and action, I can’t wait.
Full five stars again, of course. Did I mention I love this series?
This book includes:
• Lovely and badass female characters
• Fantastic mental illness rep
• Political intrigue that will keep you hooked
• The most satisfying nose-crunching punch in all the
lands
• Keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat action
• A character you can channel all your negative
thoughts and feelings into hating
• Aggressive twink calling his older silver fox husband a
‘good boy’
• The hottest fingering scene you ever did read
• Imperfect kids acting their age (and being cute)
• Soulmates going through a rough patch
• A diverse group of friends who would do
anything for each other, including hugs and forehead
kisses
• Awkward and hilarious sex talks with your boyfriend’s
ex boyfriend who is now your friend’s boyfriend

Connor stepped backward until their fingertips were the only thing still tethering them together. “Don't forget—I love you.” Tears pricked in his eyes and blurred the sunset silhouette of his lover. Their connection broke and pulled the words from his lips without any second thoughts or hesitation. “Love you too, babe. Never stopped. Never will.”

He tried to reach out as Connor moved past him toward the door while brushing a hand over his cheeks as he stormed away with the duffel bag in hand. Theo took a step to chase after him, but his knees buckled with the sudden movement. They hit the floor as the echo of a door slamming in the distance shattered through the sound of Theo's blood rushing too loud in his ears.

“I love you, Connor.” Theo whispered the words softly into Connor’s hair. That tiny little touch and those words were what broke the dam. Connor completely fell apart in Theo's arms and he held him through every single sob that tore from his chest. He was breathless. He was broken. He was beautiful. And Theo would never, ever let him suffer alone again.
