"I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm no virgin, but even if I'm not completely unfortunate looking, I seem to have a personality that's just not compatible with finding and keeping a boyfriend."
You ever read something and think 'did I write this?'
This book is peak entertainment for me. I'm such a sucker for the medium/psychic-helps-police trope. I gobble that shit up. This is one of the first MM books I read actually, and this time I listened to the audiobook. Joel Leslie honestly can't be real. Is there any accent he can't do??
I don't have too many thoughts as I'm really just rereading/listening to prepare for book #3, but yeah. If you need some well-written humor, spice, a Scotland Yard inspector who - apparently - looks like Taron Egerton, and a clumsy twink who talks to ghosts, this is the one.
It’s not 5 stars for me because the relationship falls to the background a lot. Luckily we get more books with these MCs (which I never ever say usually lol).
"'Or did you just want to browse a bit? Are you looking for something in particular? A Beginner's Guide to Wicca? How to Dance Naked under the Full Moon with Friends without making it Awkward? That book was really quite informative, not sure why it didn't sell more copies,' she muses."

“You ever meet someone and want to buy them a taser for their bathtub?”
This series is so much fun, and I love getting the POV from both characters. I wasn’t necessarily missing it in book 1, but I usually prefer dual POV. I was also happy to discover that there’d been a switch in narrators between book 1 and 2. That was definitely a good choice.
Highly recommend this series if you enjoy psychic characters, low angst and mystery solving.

“Yeah, babe, I can see that the two of you were together at one point,” Jon said dryly, finally lifting his head and pinning me in place with those baby blues. Dammit. Ever get that feeling you’ve got one foot in a grave, the other on a banana peel?
The most disturbing thing about accidentally waking up at four in the morning is realizing some people do this on purpose so they can exercise.

“So. Where to for lunch?” “You wanna get pancakes?” He sounded so hopeful, like a five-year-old. “Sure,” I agreed easily, as I really didn’t care and he sounded perfectly adorable. “Let’s get pancakes.”
This book (and the entire series) is like a warm hug of sweetness and entertainment. I am such a sucker for a character with psychic abilities, and this series leans into that heavily. The MCs are (new) coworkers in an investigative agency with people who help the police solve cases, and I love it.
Both MCs are absolute sweethearts and they fit so well together. It’s not super heavy on the romance or spice, but I really enjoy what’s there. It’s got that ‘cozy mystery’ vibe.
I love this book, but I unfortunately can’t recommend the audiobook. It was rough. Definitely read the ebook if you can (and want to), though.

Black holes. Emptiness. Loneliness. My name etched into eternity is a cold comfort. I cannot sleep beside the Cup. I cannot wrap my arms around it and feel its heartbeat, or feel its breath move through my hair. I may love this sport, and love the chase of this championship, but it will not love me back.
I think this was my fourth time reading this book. The chemistry between these characters is through the damn roof. The kind that gives you butterflies, makes your cheeks ache from smiling so much, and makes you kick your feet like a silly teenager. It’s oh-so good.
It’s a beautiful, relatively uncomplicated sexual awakening, where the focus is on how to reach your dreams and live up to (massive) expectations, while also being true to yourself and finding that someone who can be there outside of the sport. Hunter and Bryce find that perfect fit with each other. It is also just straight up adorable that Hunter 100% fangirls over Bryce the first time they meet.
Holy shit, he knows my name.
I could faint. I could also puke, right onto the ice, right between his skates. “Hi,” I squeak. “I wear your number.” “Enchanté.” Bryce's grin grows. “I wear your number, too.”
There’s not a lot of relationship angst, and the book will lull you into a false sense of security, and then kick you in the teeth - true Talbert style. It’s so worth it though.
Obviously, as it’s a Tal Bauer book, the writing is freaking gorgeous. I can’t say anything about the accuracy of the French-Canadian phrases, but I do know there’s *a lot* of it, so definitely have a means of translation handy while reading.
I projected my dreams onto the curve of his smile and the warmth of his shoulder when he leaned against me and laughed.

This is the man I have been missing. Not my hero. Not the man from the posters on my teenage walls. The real Bryce, the man from midnights and empty drives and lonely rivers, and the man who looked me in the eyes and dared to risk everything because, somehow, I made his heart beat faster.

I chose to come alone. If I’m lonely, that’s my fault. Clay isn’t my friend, he’s just been kind. And he’s sure as hell not more than a friend.
I started reading this book for the first time a year ago today, so it feels fitting to review it now. I’ve read and listened to it a whole bunch of times since then, and it’s still just as charming and sweet. It’s just straight up a great freaking story, and has become one of my go-to comfort books.
Ethan is such a sweetheart and he deserves all the good things. I also very much love Clay’s sexual awakening. It feels real. He stumbles a bit and deals with internalized homophobia, but he’s so kind and Ethan helps him through it.
The disability representation is also excellent in this book. It’s not at all romanticized, and although Ethan is dealing well with being hard of hearing during the book, he didn’t always. I think it’s important to show/tell about the hard parts as well.
Ethan laughed genuinely, and Clay almost wanted to call him pretty when he smiled like that. Strange to think of a bloke that way.

He laughed at himself. The dude had been nice to him for, like, five minutes, and Ethan had built it into a fling in his head already. He really was pathetic.
“It won’t always hurt this much. All things fade. It doesn’t mean you forget, but the pain won’t be there in every breath, sweetie.”
Clay was a man— adult and solid. And hot, but it was the dependability and strength emanating from him that attracted Ethan the most.

“I’m going to love you forever.”
I’m not easily bothered by external stuff (violence, injuries, murder, you name it). At all. Yet this book made me squirm, even the second time reading it. Sure, The Murder Between Us is graphic and suspenseful, but the two books can’t even be compared when it comes to levels of awfulness. Tal Bauer wrote all of it in the most amazing way, and I loved every gut-clenching, tear-stained, squirmy moment. He writes suspense and bad guys *so* well. The psychological aspects of this thriller are just as impactful as the physical trauma and case. That includes Cole’s deteriorating mental health as well as really getting into the mind of the serial killer, through his own POVs, past interrogation and current situations. It’s flippin’ brilliant, and it’s a book (and duology) that I think anyone who feels comfortable doing so should read.
As can be expected, dealing with all of this trauma, past and present, affects a relationship, and Noah and Cole really go through it in this book. You just have to know that they get the most beautiful HEA with their lovely Katie, who is also a fantastic side character, and an emotional teenager through and through.
There’s a lot of good authors in this genre. Some are great too, but I still haven’t found anyone else who does what Tal Bauer manages to do (to me, anyway). These books are special.
And he already lived in a totality of fear, in a paralyzing terror that lasted the eternity between his heartbeats.

Every day, Cole put his face on like a mask. Something inside of him felt like it had dropped into the center of a deep pool, plunging further and further away. He felt like a worried thread coming loose, like part of him was unraveling.
They watched him walk away, slowly sipping their champagne. Cole elbowed Noah, flicking both his eyebrows and then jerking his head toward the hunk in the apron. Noah went redder than Cole had ever seen, fluorescent meltdown magenta, caught checking out another man. Cole giggled and kissed Noah’s temple, his cheek, holding him close, as he whispered, “I love you so much.”
Noah had drawn a heart over his sink in dry-erase marker. Would they ever not be ridiculous about each other? Would this hummingbird heart he had for Noah ever slow down? God, he hoped not. He loved loving Noah.
Noah had a second drink that night after dinner, but he’d also made love to Cole with a fevered intensity that had Cole desperately trying to muffle his groans, his gasps that were practically shouts. Lord, he’d hoped Katie had her earphones in that night.
Love was active. Love was engaged. Love was being there, day in and day out.

Why did it feel like he’d gone and met the man of his dreams, on a Wednesday night right here in Las Vegas?
This duet is probably my favorite duet, at least as far as romantic suspense goes, so it’s really difficult to review it. Let me just preface this with the fact that I LOVE Tal Bauer. I could go on and on and fucking on about his books and the writing.
He grinned up at Cole, still trying to catch his breath, his heart still thundering. “You know, I think I might be gay.” Cole threw his head back and laughed.
The romantic parts of this is (obviously) phenomenal. It’s Tal. The connection between Noah and Cole is instant, but there’s no instalove or that kind of deal. They just fit each other so well, and even when they’re struggling, you’re cheering for them to figure it out and get together so everyone can be happy, lol. It’s definitely not smooth sailing for them, and they have a somewhat unconventional start to their relationship, with a one night stand in Las Vegas. Even with the casual sex though, there’s so much more there. If you’ve ever read anything by Tal Bauer, you know the kind of connection he’s capable of writing. This one is no different. Whenever they’re together, it’s hot, it’s sweet, it’s heartwarming, and at times it’s a little heartbreaking. This definitely continues in The Grave Between Us.
Cole studied him. Noah felt his gaze trace over his profile, wander from his hair to his lips, lingering there, before roaming further south. He cast Cole a quick, sidelong glance. “Here? Now?” he murmured. “Can’t help it.” A flush rose on Cole’s cheeks. “You have me head over heels.”
The murder mystery/case solving part is also fantastic. You can tell that a lot of thought, planning and most likely research went into this. I have a strong stomach so none of the graphic details in this bothered me, but the content warnings are warranted. I will also say that after reading The Grave Between Us, this book seems rather tame in comparison, lol. It’s so well thought out though, and even when you think you have a handle on what the hell is going on, you’ll probably end up being surprised. Gah, the whole thing is just so damn good.
Romantic suspense is my favorite genre, so pairing that with my favorite MM author (who is arguably one of the best in the genre overall), you know I’ll go crazy for it. This is my third time reading this one, and it won’t be the last. Be warned that if you read this one and feel comfortable with the content, you might not feel the same about book 2 in the duet. That one turned my stomach a couple times, which hasn’t happened more than once since then. I’ll get to rereading that and getting the review up soon-ish. I believe you could comfortably read this as a standalone, as they get a HFN ending, and there’s no overall case/mystery bits that carry over to the second book, if I remember correctly.
Raising a teen, Cole had discovered, was a delicate balancing act between trying to keep them safe and not crossing the line into a full-on parental surveillance state.

He needed to do this. He needed to take this step, at the very least. Be among his people. Be in solidarity with himself. Walk in the sunlight as a gay man—if only to himself—for once in his adult life.
I can’t really put my finger on exactly why, but these characters, this story, won’t leave my head. I have lost count of the amount of times I’ve read or listened to it by now. I have loved every single book I’ve read by Tal Bauer, and some of are probably objectively better than this one, but I just love it. so. much.
He was living half a life, with space carved out for a dream he’d killed in 1991.
It sort of feels like the first half is focused on Tom, Mike, and their eventual relationship. In the second half, the suspense and political aspect kicks in for real. However, there is still romance all the way through.
“I really like him. I like him too much.” He ruffled her ears, pulled her skin forward, making her face squishy with wrinkles. She tolerated it, licking his face in retaliation. “I’m afraid this is going to hurt, Etta Mae.”
Tom is one of my all time favorite characters. He is deeply sad, lonely and closeted. He grew up watching his friends and community die, he worked for years as a state prosecutor in a horribly flawed justice system, and now he’s the youngest federal judge. Even after all that, he's such a hopeful and sweet man, who still believes in the law, and doing what’s right. It kinda sounds like I’m trying to sell him to you, lol, and I guess i sort of am. For the first half of the book, he makes me tear up *a lot*, even after reading the damn book close to ten times.
Mike is also a wonderfully developed character, and I adore his growth through this book. He isn’t perfect, but then the author’s characters rarely are. Kris is also one of the strongest and most interesting side characters I know of. I plan on reading his book (Whisper) eventually, but I have to work myself up to it, lol.
“Oh, honey, you know I don’t do manual labor. You called the wrong friend.”
I can’t recommend this book enough.

He’d never planned to share his home with anyone, but he’d built everything for two. Two barstools. A kitchen nook for two, cozy and loving. A leather chair large enough to cuddle in, beside a quaint fireplace. Everything in twos, two by two by two, like he was mocking himself every day with the thought, the hope, the dream he could never have.
“Okay.” Mike smiled weakly. “Okay? Just like that?” “Yes. I trust you. Personally and professionally. I can’t say that and then undermine your advice.”
Mike had his face pressed right into Tom’s cheek, into his neck, and his arms were wrapped around Tom, their legs tangled together. Mike was a human koala bear, and Tom was happy to be his tree.

“If you never step foot outside these four walls again, I’ll bring the world to you. Or keep it all away. Whatever you need to feel safe.”
This book was my very first M/M romance, and I have now listened to the audiobook three times as well. It’s not a very complicated or long story, but the characters are very lovable and I think I’ve connected with them well. There’s also plenty of suspense in the story, which we know I love. Both main characters have suffered pretty horrible abuse, but in very different ways. They understand each other and give each other support and understanding. I think it’s lovely that Graham just wanted to be a friend to Quinten in the beginning. They valued having someone in their life, someone they could hug and trust, way more than sex. There’s still spice (and it's good), but they needed that feeling of safety first. It might feel like a fast burn considering all of that, but their history helped them create that bond.
I think this story will always be special to me exactly because it’s the book that led to me reading hundreds of M/M books since, but it’s also just a solid, good book. Tim Paige and Greg Boudreaux did a fantastic job with the audiobook as well.
Highly recommend if you enjoy mental health representation, past trauma and suspense.

There would never be anybody who Memphis could just reach for, who wouldn’t hesitate to reach back.
I was looking for a book with breeding kink (for reasons), so it was a perfect excuse to reread this book. I love a prickly broken boy with an older stoic, protective man who loves him, and this book is a really good case of exactly that situation. Preacher has lived more of his life in prison than out of it, so he’s a little rough around the edges, but he’s also super sweet and caring.
Kissing Memphis was like the first breath of air he’d taken as a free man.
Memphis is like an angry little gremlin who’d rather attack first and apologize later (if ever), which is understandable with the level of trauma from his past. I love him so much.
It’s an uncomplicated story and the suspense hits just right. I know this series doesn’t get nearly as much attention as the Necessary Evils series does, but I definitely recommend this if you enjoy Onley James.

When Preacher released him, he gently slapped Memphis on the ass, and a shiver of excitement ran through him. Who knew he liked a man who slapped him on the ass and bossed him around?
