The sight of her was like being sucker-punched in the stomach, slapped across the face, and receiving a sexy stroke in the groin simultaneously. Too much to sort through.

One of my favorite MF romances and one I’ve reread and listened to a handful of times. The audiobook is super good, and I just adore Beau’s accent. It’s got really well done mental illness rep. It’s not romanticized in any way, and the person struggling isn’t automatically excused and forgiven for doing bad things, but is given understanding. I really love that.

You don’t often see books with a character struggling with obsessive compulsive disorder, and even though I have exactly zero personal experience with it, the representation seems really good. You can definitely tell the author has taken care with the subject.

The romance is super sweet and fun, and even when there’s trouble, it’s not super angsty. These characters just work so well together, and I think that’s why I keep coming back to it.

Moments of quiet ordinary, made extraordinary by sharing them with the woman I love.

It’s also just a genuinely funny book. Highly recommend.

Cletus had instructed Duane to put his concerns in the suggestion box. Of note, Cletus had labeled the shredder in the upstairs office suggestion box a year ago when Duane had suggested half days on Fridays.

For a split second, and likely my imagination, I thought I saw the side of Shelly’s mouth tick up. But just as fast, all trace of amusement disappeared. Dear Lord. If she smiled . . . that could be catastrophic to anyone in its path.

I squinted at the old bird and was about to tease her when the real bird in the garage chose that moment to blurt out, “Darin! You asshole!” Glancing at the parrot where it still perched on the Pontiac, I grimaced. “What’s the bird’s name?” I heard Shelly clear her throat before saying, “It used to be Darin.” This revelation earned her a long, curious look, the moment stretching while Shelly met my stare silently, swallowing twice while I studied her. The bird was the first to speak. “Cocks are for closers.”

Resentment simmered below the lust. How dare he be so sweet to make me want him?

I really wanted to love this book, but there was too much that didn’t work for me. I enjoyed parts of it, but it really felt like the first 50% and the last 50% were two different books, and Jude in particular really changed a lot in a very short amount of time. With it being a rejected mate trope I expected more hurt feelings and angst, but it (for the most part) felt like the MCs weren’t all that bothered by the rejection/rejecting. I was also hoping Jude’s pack would be a bigger part of the story, but other than towards the end, the story and characters felt kinda isolated.

It’s not a terrible story or anything, but not the right one for me, unfortunately.

Minus points for using the description ‘pleated rim’. That’s traumatizing.

Instead of screaming and fleeing like any sane human, he’d smiled up at me, put his hands on my body, his… member hard and tempting. I rolled my eyes at myself. I couldn’t even say the word—penis—without flinching, and I had one myself!

I had a feeling that our love was just going to be like that—bursting from us at every moment, overflowing into every corner of our lives—and I couldn’t wait to get started.

They were supposed to grow old together in their little house with their little cat.

This book is the first book about an established couple I’ve been excited about reading in a long, long time. I really enjoyed The Kite, and Asher and Harry were such awesome characters that I was stoked about another adventure with these boys.

It was really nice to read a solid suspense novel again. It didn’t hold back on the brutality and grittiness at all, and at one point I even cringed a little, quickly followed by a big smile (yes, I have issues, rest assured, I’m not working on it).

“It’s all I want. A quiet life with you. I don’t even care where, as long as I have you. You’re my home, Harry.”

We got a different look at Asher this time around. His walls are down after living as a safe civilian for two years, and he is not prepared to come face to face with trauma from his past. It’s neat to see a character in a different way—less snark and humor—but still have that character feel ‘true’. Harry is his stoic, protective, badass self still, and whenever he goes full beast-mode, it makes me happy.

I freaking *loved* meeting August and Jake again. Tallowwood is one of my favorite N.R. books, and it felt like visiting old friends. I could read endless books about them.

A really good follow-up to The Kite and can definitely recommend it. I’m deducting half a star for what was maybe the most intense tease of switching it up in the bedroom I’ve ever read, lol. Asher saying he’s gonna bone his much bigger man when he’s usually the greediest bottom ever, and then not doing it on page? Straight to jail!

“I don’t know what I ever did to deserve you.” “You didn’t shoot me that day in Madrid, remember? And after that, you annoyed me until I fell in love with you, remember?”

I had to be strong every moment of my life, in control, indomitable. But with Eric? It was easy to give him the reins because I knew he wouldn’t abuse the privilege, even if the inhuman growling still sent chills down my spine.

You ever start reading a book and think to yourself ‘this book was made for me’? That’s what happened with this one. I can only assume this will be my top read of October. It just had everything I want in a book. Lots of action, violence, mortal peril and suspense, as well as a genuine connection between MCs where spice was the result of their love and not the main focus, as well as some truly funny scenes. Oh, and the delicious possessiveness and protectiveness. Agh, it really had it all.

Knowing how easily promises could be broken, I didn’t make them lightly. But I would move heaven and earth for him until the day I died — that was my real promise, even if I could never tell him that.

This was my third Ashlyn Drewek book and I can only take this as a sign that I need to try more. The writing is amazing and the stories feel original. Even if you’ve read something that sounds similar, this author definitely makes the tropes their own.

I kept my head down, scribbling at my desk and checking my phone in case I didn’t hear it vibrate. Not that Eric texted. Ever. I’d given him shit for it once and he responded with a lengthy diatribe about the decline of interpersonal communication in the twenty-first century.

If you enjoy police procedure and/or vampire romance, I so highly recommend this book.

Bracing for the cooing and hair petting, I opened my eyes slowly. It didn’t come. No one greeted me, just that stupid machine. No one waited wistfully. No one paced my bedside, hands wringing. I was alone. Thank God. I hated when people made a fucking spectacle of things.

Feigning confusion, I frowned and leaned away, not saying a word. When a human saw something unnatural it was best to let them gaslight themselves into believing a different series of events occurred.

“Coming from the man who drinks pig’s blood…” I started in on my third taco, not the least bit put off. It meant there was more for me. “It’s practical,” he sighed. “I need something on hand when I forget to eat.” “I never ‘forget’ to eat.” “I know.” He laughed a little harder than I considered good fun.

“Gorgeous,” Hank said, “I don’t think there’s a single thing I wouldn’t be willing to do to get you to smile at me.”

I didn’t like either Hank or Kevin much when reading Laying Pipe. Hank especially came off quite bad in most of book 1, but I ended up loving both of them so much, and I think I enjoyed this book even more than Laying Pipe. I love solid, believable character development that doesn’t happen overnight.

Kevin is super prickly and has some past trauma that makes it hard for him to be vulnerable, so it was super lovely to see him finally trust Hank and let his guard down.

Kiki is also one of those authors that can make me blush a little. Dirty talk usually makes me feel one of two ways: either ‘ew make it stop it’s so awkward’ and ‘meh, I don’t care at all’, HOWEVER, damn, the dirty talk in this worked so well. Sort of just Hank aggressively loving on Kevin, saying the hottest things.

I know many people love MM because there’s not so much a focus on marriage and kids, and that many feel it’s very heteronormative to include those things in queer romance. Queer men can also want the beautiful house, the loving marriage and a handful of kids tho, and I really loved to see that in this story. Kevin just wants to be a house husband, being spoiled and loved on by his man. I would totally read a follow-up story about them becoming/being parents.

All he had ever wanted was a partner to love him, kids to dote on, and a home that was filled with love and laughter and warmth. Other people dreamed of having a certain career or being rich and famous, but Kevin had only ever wanted the one thing he hadn’t had growing up: a stable, loving family.

Also, Hank is such a smooth talker. So many terms of endearment, and they all felt special and genuine. Beautiful, gorgeous, baby, etc. Who knew big and beefy guys in backwards baseball caps were the guys saying shit like this? ⬇️

Letting out a soft, broken sound, Kevin threw his arms around Hank’s neck and kissed him. Irresistible bastard.

“You nervous, gorgeous?” The unspoken Do you want me to stop? floated in the air around them, but he waited to see what Kevin would say, wanting him to only ever feel good in Hank’s bed. A little bit of nerves was okay, but too much and it wasn’t sexy anymore.

Kevin didn’t realize how loud his constant moaning had become until Hank chuckled hoarsely right next to his ear and said, “Fuck, you sound like such a slut for my cock right now. You always need it so bad, don’t you?”

“You don’t have to stop loving him to love me.”

A lot of this was really good and quite a bit of it didn’t work for me. I picked it up because I felt like reading something that would hurt my feelings, and it did do that at least. It’s not easy to write romance where one of the MCs is a very recent widower (less than a year), and I thought it was handled well. Grief can be a messy process and I enjoyed seeing it portrayed as such. There’s no right way to grieve.

Where it lost me a little is that since so much of the focus was on Ren and his grief, we didn’t get to know Major all that much. It felt like he lived to be with Ren, and less like his own person. He comes across as a super kind person, but after finishing the book it feels like I know next to nothing about him, other than that he loves Ren, he’s a big bear, and he has a ‘roster’ of regular hookups.

There is nothing wrong with casual sex, and even though I don’t quite understand it on a fundamental level (demi, yay), I understand that it’s normal and nothing wrong with it. However, I don’t need it crammed down my throat over and over. I thought it was a bit excessive with the focus on his hookup habits. It’s one thing to add it to show him struggling after things went down/wrong with Ren, because it was important for the story and showing his heartache, but the word ‘roster’ is mentioned 10(!) times throughout the book, and every time a conversation about Major’s usual hookups followed. Something about calling these human beings a roster, unsarcastically I might add, felt super dehumanizing and icky. Yes, I get it, he fucks a lot. Usually at least two times a week actually, and I know that because the book tells us.

Anyway. A really lovely story in many ways, and the letter from the dead husband got me good. The tears were definitely flowing. There was just too much that made me feel a little uncomfortable. That’s probably on me, though.

He was a young bear of a guy—tall, slightly tan, with a heavy beard that made him look older than his friends. He also had the kind of belly that was made to be worshipped.

“Don’t underestimate how willing I am to go without oxygen in pursuit of a good ass-eating.”

I grimaced at Major and reached for the room spray, which did nothing to cover the scent of cum. Now it smelled like we’d fucked in a rose garden, and there wasn’t much to be done about it.

“Um…” Danny rubbed his face, looking tired, but he still smiled up at me. Even when he was exhausted, he tried to stay cheerful, which made me love him even more. Especially as I was the opposite. When I was in a bad mood, I sulked. Overtly.

I finally got around to buying and listening to this on audio, and it was just as funny as I remembered. Definitely worth the reread. I never get tired of Wyn and Danny shenanigans, and although we get to see more of them during the series, this novella is the perfect follow-up to Soul Eater.

If you’ve enjoyed the other books, you gotta read this one too. The whole thing is from Wyn’s POV and it’s genuinely just perfect and hilarious.

Our journey progressed very slowly, because Danny wanted to stop and look at everything. Absolutely everything.

I had no idea what that meant, but it normally succeeded in making him come and give me some attention. It worked.

“Can we draw them away somehow?” I shook my head. “They wouldn’t all leave. They would never leave the tear entirely unguarded. I could fling them all far away?” I added, eagerness bleeding into my voice. “Humans don’t tend to survive being flung great distances through the air, Wyn.”

I finally got around to restarting and finishing this book and I’m so glad I did. There’s little I enjoy more than a sad and hurting boy being taken care of and comforted by a sweet daddy character, and that’s this book to a T. It made me tear up a lot because I just hurt so much for Sterling.

Jugs was always gentle with me—well, until he was buried deep inside me. Then the pleasure got too much, and he fucked me so hard and fast that I could do nothing but take it.

2nd read review:
I finally got around to listening to the audiobook. I kept putting it off because I knew it was gonna hurt my feelings all over again, and I didn’t know if audio would make it worse or slightly better. I still don’t really know, lol. I love Lor and Jugs so much. It’s just a beautiful and moving love story.

A tear rolled down his flushed cheek as his mouth trembled. “I’m scared, Lor.”

___________________________________

This series has been my favorite series basically since I read Soul Eater, and it has been reconfirmed as such with every new book. There’s just something magical about the writing and world Lily Mayne has created.

I’m not gonna write as much as I usually do, but here’s a summary of my experience:

grinning - smiling - worried - crying - crying more - how am I still crying? - make it stop - I need fluids - smiling while crying - smiling - grinning end scene

I’m literally exhausted after reading this, but it was so flippin’ good. Lor is the sweetest character ever, and Jugs is definitely one of my favorite human characters in the Monstrous series. I can’t wait for the day Jugs interacts with Danny. Can y’all imagine?! It’s going to be absolutely glorious.

I’ve never had a problem with control before, but fuck does Milo make me want to lose it.

I mostly enjoyed this quite a lot but I also feel a little ‘meh’ about it. I loooove the dad’s best friend trope so much so of course I enjoyed it, but it was lacking a little something something. I kept wishing for more angst and challenges. Hoping there would be some drama, but there never was. Don’t get me wrong, more often than not I am a sucker for no/low angst, but I’ve been in the mood for a bit of oomph lately.

It’s a sweet book with lots of good spice (maybe too much in a short amount of time?), and some humorous moments.

“So you want us to take you out onto the dance floor and grind on you until he loses his shit and drags you out of here in a jealous rage?” “If it wouldn’t be a hardship?” I flash them a dimpled grin, hoping it’ll charm them into helping me out.

Can definitely recommend. Just not a home run for me this time.

I can’t imagine a bigger violation of the bro code than hooking up with my friend’s newly discovered son.

“Can I ask you something?” Milo asks. I arch an eyebrow. “Sure.” I’m starting to learn that a question like that from Milo could be anything from ‘Why is the sky blue?’ to ‘Do you resent your mother?’.
