ARC review
This was only my second book by these authors, but I am definitely a huge fan! This was a perfect blend of tender sweetness, an original plot that kept me invested from start to finish, funny and interesting side characters, and just the right amount of spicy goodness. The change from the most gentle caretaking daddy outside of the bedroom to grab-you-and-hold-you-down-while-pounding-you-through-the-mattress roughness, all because that’s what his boy wanted, was perfect.
He’d spent years learning what made himself tick, and having someone to cherish, protect, and pamper was it.
I suck at reading any interconnected series from start to finish, which means I didn’t read book 1 and 2 before reading this one. Although I can definitely see why you might want to, I do believe you can read this as a standalone and still enjoy it. I certainly did. However, I do want to go back and read the first two books now because I liked this one so much.
Fix and Liam were great together, and I loved this urban fantasy world. Great entertainment with a pretty good twist at the end. I also really loved how supportive Fix was of Liam’s sex work (he’s a solo camboy). Fix never even batted an eye and has no problem with Liam continuing the work he loves. All he wants is for Liam to be safe and happy.

“You believe in fate?” Liam asked. “I met you, didn’t I? In a room full of chaos I found you. I wouldn’t know what else to call it but fate. Maybe luck?”
“Can I touch you?” Fix asked quietly into the thickened silence. There we go. This was familiar. This was what he would get from Fix. And he’d take it. He’d make it work. “Yes,” he said, expecting Fix to reach for his cock, his ass. But Fix sat on the edge of Liam’s bed and scooped him up like he weighed nothing. He wrapped his pink sheet around him like he was the sweetest confectionery and placed him on his lap instead.
Fix was left to stretch out his neck and will his cock to settle down while he pulled his shirt back on. He wasn’t getting any attention just yet and he needed to get with the program. They were wooing now.

A psychic medium, a homicide detective, magic, ghosts, a murder mystery, mortal peril and romance — literally nothing more I could want. I have lots of reviews to write, but I’m writing this first so that I can start book 2 as soon as possible.
For the most part I absolutely adored this book. It clearly had everything I love, but also two men who actually want a relationship, which is rare, even if it wasn’t that straightforward for them. My only complaint is that they said they wanted more than sex but their actions and thoughts were a level of sexual at times that really didn’t align with the ‘I want a relationship’ thing. But then again, maybe that’s just an allosexual thing, lol.
Anyway. Greatly enjoyed it and will continue immediately.
(The books aren’t in KU and I listened to the audiobook so no quotes, sorry).

Ugh, the beginning of this book annoyed me to the point where I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue the series. At the end of book 1, (view spoiler)
I was hoping those things would be picked up in book 2, but not even a mention. There are bonus novellas/shorts between book 1 and 2, but in my humble opinion, bonus material should not contain things that are important for the plot, for example the fact that Simon was apparently attacked by Vic’s ex boyfriend, which was casually mentioned in the middle of this book.
HOWEVER. Everything else was great. I’m really enjoying all the supernatural and psychic elements, as well as all the global and local folklore. I also enjoyed the part where Simon and Vic worked to understand each other’s need to be protective and where it was coming from, as it was hindering their work a bit and creating friction. So I’m continuing the series, eventually. I don’t feel a burning need to continue as of right now.

“No hugging,” I warned her. It was in our contract. “Do you need emotional support? Do you want me to call someone?”
I think this is my new favorite book in the series. Murderbot is its anti-social self, but my god I love this character an unhealthy amount. It truly cracks me up. There’s also so many clever and very real thoughts and feelings in these books, and it just makes it that much better.
There were countless amazing interactions between Murderbot and its ‘non-friends’ throughout the book, as well as some top notch action. Can’t wait to continue.

The good thing about being a construct is that you can’t reproduce and create children to argue with you.
“Anyone who thinks machine intelligences don’t have emotions needs to be in this very uncomfortable room right now.”
(I know, it’s a logo, but I hate it when humans and augmented humans ruin things for no reason. Maybe because I was a thing before I was a person and if I’m not careful I could be a thing again.)
I am actually alone in my head, and that’s where 90 plus percent of my problems are.

I was having an emotion, and I hate that. I’d rather have nice safe emotions about shows on the entertainment media; having them about things real-life humans said and did just led to stupid decisions […].
I never have anything intelligent to say about these books. I just love them a lot. I was so excited for Murderbot to finally reunite with the crew from book 1. Murderbot is such a antisocial, grumpy little shit, but it can’t stop caring either, lol. Off I go to continue the series.
It would have been hilarious if I wasn’t about to die. It was still a little hilarious.

(Possibly I was overthinking this. I do that; it’s the anxiety that comes with being a part- organic murderbot. The upside was paranoid attention to detail. The downside was also paranoid attention to detail.)
How humans decide what to do with their arms on a second-by-second basis, I still have no idea.

Are you shitting my dick?! Space murder mystery!! I have ascended to the heavens. Literally couldn’t think of anything better than Murderbot solving a goddamn murder on a space station. I know I just said book 5 was my new favorite in the series, but…

Hmm. I loved this one too but it felt a little all over the place and unfinished. It was neat that it focused on Murderbot’s mental health and struggles, but there was no resolution. It felt very isolated in a way.
I’m really wanting more of Murderbot interacting with Dr. Mensah. They’re best friends after all. Even if Murderbot would likely never admit it, lol. Anyway, can’t believe we’re 7 books in and I still want more. Unheard of.

I feel pretty much the same about this book as I did about book 1: cute at times, I love Lawson as a character, there’s some good mortal peril, but it’s ultimately quite forgettable. There’s just not a lot there to really get into, you know? Nothing wrong with it, just a bit meh.

He’s my Cyrus, mine, and I will fight a bitch that tries to take him from me.
Well that was cute and fun. Having a tiny femme guy being the scary monster who everyone fears is just too much fun and way too cute. Badass and scary, but dress it up in skirts, crop tops and platform boots.
I don’t have a whole lot of thoughts on the romance. It was easy and cute. The focus was mostly on Cyrus and his c***y abusive ex, which makes sense when you introduce a plotline like that, yet it felt a bit strange to have that level of seriousness and abuse in what is essentially a ‘cute, little monster romcom’.
Anyway. It was entertaining and sweet. Couldn’t quite figure out what it meant to be, but mostly enjoyed. Nox was adorable.

Never in my life have I let human gender ideas decide how I dress. I dress for myself, and today I’m a happy pink princess. Right down to the pretty silver jeweled barrette in my hair that in the right light could be a tiara. I’m a guy that knows exactly what he wants and goes for it. Human ideals be damned.
Nox was adorable.

lighthearted
How, after so many relationships of nothing offered and nothing gained, he stumbled upon a man who loves so wholly, so violently in his softness.
This little short story was really beautifully written. It was a little absurd, it was sweet, and it was just… different. I don’t have a lot of intelligent things to say about it, but considering it’s only 22 pages, I’m really impressed by how lovely it was.
It also has probably the prettiest cover I’ve seen. Highly recommend.

Haniel takes Wren’s thighs in his hands, their thickness bulging through the spaces between his fingers.
Insecurity burrows like a tick, swells and swells and swells for days, months, years, a permanent attachment. Sticky, and hard, and wet–take it between pinched fingers and try to pull it off. See the amount of skin that goes with it, and realize that the effort is not worth living free.
Love is not a cure. It is safety.
