booksafety 's review for:
The Rising
by Morgan Brice
Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.
Ugh, the beginning of this book annoyed me to the point where I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue the series. At the end of book 1, (view spoiler)
I was hoping those things would be picked up in book 2, but not even a mention. There are bonus novellas/shorts between book 1 and 2, but in my humble opinion, bonus material should not contain things that are important for the plot, for example the fact that Simon was apparently attacked by Vic’s ex boyfriend, which was casually mentioned in the middle of this book.
HOWEVER. Everything else was great. I’m really enjoying all the supernatural and psychic elements, as well as all the global and local folklore. I also enjoyed the part where Simon and Vic worked to understand each other’s need to be protective and where it was coming from, as it was hindering their work a bit and creating friction. So I’m continuing the series, eventually. I don’t feel a burning need to continue as of right now.
A somewhat weak 4 stars
