Wow... I can't believe it took me this long to pick up this classic.
The story is beautifully written and heart wrenching following Janie, our main character. It follows her as she tells the story of her life in the height of Jim Crow. It follow her through three marriages, physical abuse, and life of a black women during early 20th century. Through it all she remains strong and independent.
Even reading this now, while we are in different times, she is still a strong role model for women and shows that somethings don't change.

Oh my gosh!! Why did it take me this long to pick up these series???
The first volume in this Sci-Fi/Fantasy series was a great opener. The art style is wonderful and the story was so compelling right from the beginning. I love the world. You get a good mix of world building but also get thrown in and learn as you read.
The story follows Marko and Alana, who are on opposite sides of a war and fall in love. The first volume opens with Alana giving birth to their child who you learn is the narrator. It essentially is the story of her life.
Can't wait to pick up the rest of the series....

The second volume is just as great as the first. It wastes no time and picks up right where the first one ends.
This just continues to follow our characters through life during war, raising a child on the run and the people and friends they meet along the way. We get flashbacks to the past which are weaved in perfectly. We get more character and world building and meet new people as well. Mixed underneath and weaved into the story is the political and social commentary that drives our heroes and moves the story along. So much is happening and it doesn't feel overwhelming. The pacing is just right.
Such an entertaining series for any fantasy/sci-fi fan.

I had a lot of issues with this book from the very beginning.
