Traitor is a young adult historical thriller set in World World II by Amanda McCrina. Wow! This book certainly took me on a wild ride. It was an intense read...in all the best ways. I just finished this novel and I honestly feel like I still haven't caught my breath totally. Traitor is a thriller adventure about two spies who are on the run during World War II. It explores themes of betrayal, loyalty and all of the shades of gray in between. It was a fantastic book and I cannot wait for more from Amanda McCrina.

As a history major, I found the World War II backdrop to be a fascinating one for setting the story. Further, I loved that the bulk of the book is focused on some of the lesser known conflicts in the war. Traitor has two timelines that alternate between 1941 and 1944, and the spies are individuals involved in the conflict between Poland and the Ukraine during this period. At times, it was hard for me to figure out what timeline I was in because there is quite a bit of back and forth, but it was never too jarring for me. On top of the different timelines we have the two main characters- Aleksey living in the war in 1941 and Tolya in 1944. There were a lot of players to keep track of and a lot of moving parts that I honestly had no idea who I could try and when. That all added to intense feeling that I had while reading this story. I also really enjoyed that the two timelines do intersect and interact with each other. It was really something to see how everything comes together!

Traitor takes you on a very high stakes thriller with so many twists and turns, it is impossible to predict them all. Amanda McCrina did a fantastic job not only telling a really twisty interesting story, but also giving us a glimpse into the every day life of a solider in the war. This book is not for the feint of heart, there are certainly some pretty devastating scenes depicted, as one would expect with a book about World War II. I really, really enjoyed Traitor. It just kept surprising me. I can't wait to read more from Amanda McCrina!

P.S. Check out the character list included with the book to help keep track of all the characters. It really helped me keep everyone straight!

Shielded is the first book in the young adult fantasy series of the same name by KayLynn Flanders. I really enjoyed Shielded. It surprised me in many ways, and there were aspects that I really enjoyed and an aspect that I wish I enjoyed more, but overall this is a series that I am very interested in continuing on. Shielded is a fantasy book that takes place on a world where magic is not equally distributed. Some kingdoms have no magic, some kingdoms have some magic and there are certain areas of the world where magic literally surrounds you (the wilds). Our story focuses mainly on the kingdoms of Hálendi and Kingdom of Turia.

Our main character, Princess Jennesara, or Jenna, is the second born child of the royal family in the kingdom of Hálendi. In Hálendi, magic is passed to the first born only. But Jenna and her older brother both have magic, which is something that she must hide. (for reasons that are explained in the book, but I won't get into here) Meanwhile, Hálendi believes that Turia does not have any magic within its' walls because of a war fought long in the past between all of the kingdoms and the evil Mages. The Mages were defeated and no one has heard from them since. Princess Jenna has been given to Price Enzo of Turia in exchange for supplies and an alliance in a current battle. Jenna and her entourage sets out to meet Prince Enzo when her group is attacked by a Mage. Jenna escapes into the Wilds and the real journey begins.

Shielded was a a great story when it comes to world building. I could vividly picture each of the kingdoms and the wilds and I loved hearing the backstory of the mages. The various points of views were great to add mystery to the overall story, and I have to say that the author kept me on my toes. I did guess a few of the plot twists, but the story took a very different direction that I was initially expecting it to, which I loved. My only complaint was in the romance department. I thought Shielded was very strong in terms of plot progression but I wasn't really feeling the romance. It was there and I liked both of the characters, but I couldn't really feel their romantic connection to one another. They just kind of liked each other, but I didn't feel like it was based on enough foundation. I am certainly interested in continuing on with the story because I am really invested in the plot of the series. I am just hoping that I will come to enjoy the romance more as the plot progresses.

Overall, if you are a plot driven reader that enjoys fantasies with great world building, I think you will really love Shielded. I can't wait to see where this series is going next.

Girl With Three Eyes is a young adult fantasy by Priya Ardis. I loved Priya's Merlin series, which I read ages ago, so I was super excited to see a new book from her. Girl With Three Eyes is a futuristic fantasy with some scifi like elements. It was a really cool story setup. I was digging the whole thing- the world, the characters and the plot. I am keeping all of the my fingers crossed that there is a second book in this series. It seems like there is going to be one with the way this book ended, so I better be right!

In Girl With Three Eyes, we meet our main character Kira, as she is sent to attend the kingdom’s most elite academy- Raj Academy. The academy setting is really cool. It was a little Harry Potter-esque. All of the students are sorted into houses based on their abilities and personality traits. The school is also very sports centric, with it's own sport called Skyboard. Skyboard is kind of like a snowboarding competition but with hoverboards. It sounds really cool and I loved the scenes describing the competitions.  I love an academy setting in a book. I think it lends itself really well to both secrets galaore and is a really good way to get to know about about the characters as we see them navigate both school and living on their own. I was a little bummed that there was not more romance in this book, but the story is much more focused on the plot/adventure than romance.

The cast of characters in Girl with Three Eyes was a great addition to the story. There is even a prince at the school! This book read as a younger YA novel, and like Harry Potter I am hoping that we see the characters mature as they get older in the next installment(s). I loved the pacing of the story because everything flowed really well, I was never bored. Priya Ardis keeps the story clipping along at a constant pace and there was is always something happening. Learning about the futuristic world and all of it's technology and cool gadgets was also a lot of fun. The secrets presented themselves along the way, and there is a bit of a quest to save the kingdom woven in throughout the story that added to fun element quite a bit. Priya Ardis does a great job throwing surprising secrets and twists at the reader throughout the book. I think it is impossible to get bored while reading Girl With Three Eyes. There is always something going on, which I really enjoyed.

Bottom line: if you are a fan of fantasy and cool technology, I think Girl with Three Eyes will be a fun read for you to check out. This book was a lot of fun, and I am really hoping that there is a sequel in store for us. I can't wait to revisit Kira and her friends.

Serpent & Dove is the first book in the young adult supernatural/paranormal romance series by author Shelby Mahurin. It is the first book in the Serpent & Dove Series. If you are new to this series, now is the perfect time to pick up Serpent & Dove because not only is this an amazing book, but the second book in the series Blood & Honey releases tomorrow! You can come back to my blog tomorrow to check out my thoughts on book two! I can give you a sneak peek right now...I am completely in love with this series. Serpent & Dove is a fantastic read centered around the church and witches!

In Serpent & Dove, we meet our main character Louise, or Lou. Lou has been on her own after running away from her mother, and she does what she needs to to get by. Early on, we also find out that Lou is a witch. She can see patterns in the threads that connect all of us. Kind of like our life source. Lou can manipulate these threads or patterns with her spells. But we learn that magic is about balance, so if she wants to make something happen she needs to give something of herself up...maybe a memory or temporarily her sight, etc. The types of magic that witches can do and the how they create magic was fascinating to me. I loved watching it all unfold. Shelby Mahurin does a great job of revealing the magic to us through actions, not through info dumping, which makes for a really immersive and enjoyable reading experience.

The plot of Serpent & Dove was awesome. It is dark and atmospheric, filled with secrets a historical french setting and lots of magic! Serpent & Dove takes place in Franch (I think in the 18th or 19th century because that is the time period that the Chasseurs' existed in the French military.) Historically, the Chasseurs were a French infantry unit, with the word Chasseurs meaning Hunter. In Serpent & Dove the Chasseurs are a witch hunting unit within the Church. Serpent & Dove features an age old battle between the Church and Witches, with the Chasseurs as the weapon against the witches. When Lou gets caught by the Chasseurs' and makes a spectacle out of their captain, she finds herself in a fake marriage with him to help him save face and his reputation. Yes, a witch (in hiding) is married to a witch hunter. It was a fake marriage trope blended in with an enemies to lovers trope that I couldn't get enough it. I loved Reid and Lou. Watching their relationship progress was fantastic! It never felt rushed and I feel like I got to know each of the characters so well. watching Reid and Lou fall for who the other person really is, was super satisfying.

I don't want to spoil the plot of Serpent & Dove, but just know that it kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. There are twists, turns and secrets that took me completely by surprise. I caught on to one of the big secrets pretty early on and I was a little worried that I had the entire book figured out. But I was totally wrong! Shelby Mahurin does a fantastic job keeping some truly surprising aces up here sleeve. I loved that! If you are a fan of witch craft stories you will love Serpent & Dove. But even if you are not, I think you should give this book a try. Witches are sometimes hit or miss for me, and I absolutely devoured this book! It made me cry and it surprised me in the best way. I loved Serpent & Dove and I am so ready for Blood & Honey!

Sing Like No One’s Listening is a young adult contemporary by author Vanessa Jones. I really enjoyed the story in Sing Like No One’s Listening. It was an emotional and heartfelt journey, and I really loved getting to know out main character Nettie. If you are a fan of emotional young adult contemporaries, then I think Sing Like No One’s Listening is a good book for you to check out. It releases today.

In Sing Like No One’s Listening we meet our main character Nettie as she is accepted into a prestigious performing arts school. The very same school that her mother once attended. We meet Nettie at a tough transition in her life. Not only is she going to a new school, but she is also still dealing with the loss of her mother. I felt Nettie’s emotions so poignantly throughout the story. Her grief manifested itself in different ways, but one of the most pressing was that it robbed her of her voice. Nettie has been unable to sing since her mother’s death, which is quite problematic when she is attending this school for her singing.

I love an academy school setting because as I have mentioned in past reviews, I think it lends itself well to learn a lot about our main characters. Not only Nettie, but with the other students and the way they all interact. Nettie faces all of her inner demons, but also some drama and hurdles from the other students and some resident mean girls, including a certain piano playing friend/romantic interest (Fletch). I loved Fletch! I thought he was great for Nettie. Everything that Nettie faced at school was important for her journey of healing and growth. I really loved this book. It felt like a warm hug while I was reading it. I wanted to grab Nettie and hug her through her pain, but watching her journey was sad at times, but overall it was really satisfying.

If you are a fan of realistic fiction stories that deal with topics like grief and emotional healing, then I think Sing Like No One’s Listening will be a satisfying read for you. I enjoyed reading Nettie’s story.

*Note: This is the second book in a series that should be read in order. If you are new to the series, please check out my review of book one- Serpent & Dove HERE*

Blood & Honey is the second book in the young adult supernatural/paranormal romance Serpent & Dove series by author Shelby Mahurin. I think Blood & Honey was a fantastic sequel to Serpent & Dove! I am completely in love with this series. Serpent & Dove is a fantastic series centered around the church and witches! Blood & Honey is even darker than the first book, and it further explores themes of what does it mean to be evil, and do shades of gray exist in the concept of good vs. evil. If you like books with plenty of twists, turns and surprises and you are not afraid of a darker book unapologetically does not pull any punches, then I think you will fall in love with Blood & Honey and this series.

Blood & Honey takes place after the events of Serpent & Dove, and jumps right in with the whole gang basically on the run from everyone. I am not going to spoil the ending of the first book, but there were some humdingers dropped on us, and all of the characters are reeling from what they discovered about each other. View Spoiler » Not to mention they are being chased from all sides. The crown, the church and the witches are all out for their blood. The plot of Blood & Honey was awesome. It is dark and atmospheric, filled with just as many secrets, some long awaited answers, plenty of new characters and so many new surprises that it is impossible to get bored while reading this book.

I loved meeting the new characters, and of course I am still such a huge fan of our core group. I didn’t talk about my love of Ansel in my first review, but I completely adore him! I still loved Reid and Lou in this book, but Lou kind of irritated me at some points while reading. I understand her motivations and her struggles, but I still felt like at times she was veering into the path of being unnecessarily mean, which I didn’t love. But that is all part of her flawed persona. No one in this series is perfect, and this is what I love about the characters. The romance felt like a constant back and forth between Reid and Lou but I loved (almost) every minute of it. As I mentioned before, Honey & Blood is a darker plot than the first book, and the stakes have been raised so everything felt more intense for me. Every page and move felt weighted in a way that I didn’t feel in the first book. It got my heart pumping!

There are some things and some scenes that completely gutted me while reading, and I am so so anxious for the third book to pick up all the pieces of my heart because Blood & Honey really did a number on me- especially the ending. Shelby Mahurin can be super cruel, but I love it in a twisted way! This sequel was fantastic and I am on the edge of my seat for the third book. I need it in my lie right now! Bottom line is this- If you are a fan of witch craft stories you will love the Serpent & Dove series. But even if you are not, I think you should give this book a try. Witches are sometimes hit or miss for me, and I absolutely devoured this book! It made me cry and it surprised me in the best way.

Woodhouse Hall is a young adult/new adult contemporary romance by Sara Marks. Woodhouse Hall is a re-imagining of Jane Austen's Emma, and I was super excited to read it. Upon first glance, it ticked off so many of my boxes- college dorm room setting, match making, romance. Seemed like it would be a cute read. Unfortunately, I did not love this book. In fact, it irritated me to no end, which is a real shame because this is normally the type of story that I would really enjoy. My biggest disappointment with the story were the characters themselves.

In Woodhouse Hall we meet our main character Amelia who is assigned to the worst dorm on campus, Woodhouse Hall. Amelia is our Emma, who is trying to set up her roommate Jenna with the student council president. There is also another storyline going on at the same time, of the demolition of Woodhouse Hall. I actually enjoyed the plotline of the story, but Amelia drove me up a wall. I found her to be completely immature. This book is college aged, which places it in the new adult age range but our main character was even too immature for young adult books, in my opinion. In true Emma fashion, she butts into other people's business with no regard for what they actually want. But she was way less endearing than Emma, and there was no character growth for Amelia, which ultimately frustrated me.

Amelia didn't listen to Jenna, didn't listen to Adam, didn't listen to Eric. She just didn't listen. And I kept hoping that she would but I was disappointed. All of her interactions felt very juvenile and one sided. When she finally "got it" the whole thing felt very forced. Bottom line: This book was just not for me. But if you are a big fan of Emma, and if you want a college book that fells like young adult, this might be a good option for you.

Happy Trail is the first book in the Park Ranger series by Daisy Prescott. Happy Trail is an adult contemporary romantic comedy series, published by Smartypants Romance. If you are new to Smartypants Romance, here is the quick breakdown of how this publishing company works. Smartypants Romance is the publishing company started by Penny Reid, which as most of you know, is one of my all time favorite romance authors. Smartypants romance brings on new authors to write their own series or stories, and the cool feature is that all of their stories will be set in the Penny Reid universe! I love this idea so, so much. It is perfect for new fans and old fans because we get all new story lines and characters, but we get to see plenty of character crossover. The Park Ranger series is set in Tennessee in Penny Reid's Green Valley world. (Home to the famous Winston Brothers!)

In Happy Trail we meet park ranger, Dr. Jay Daniels and Appalachian trail hiking socialite Olive Perry. I was completely enchanted by Jay and Olive (AKA snowbird) romance. I flippin' loved these two. From their very first encounter, I knew their story was going to be a home run for me. Happy Trail is told in dual narrative between Jay and Olive. Jay is a Park Ranger nears Cade's Cove Tennessee. He sets out to clear the trails because of an impending storm, when he finds Olive hiking alone. They get stuck in the storm, and their adventure begins. Jay and Olive gave me a major case of perma-smile. I just love those two.

Olive's story was a big part of Happy Trail, and I loved her back story. She starts out hiking the AT with her boyfriend, who is insta-famous, and pretty much only cares about his next picture and the number of likes it will get. I loved how relevant this type of D-bag was. It cracked me up in this digital social media age. When they part ways (I will let you read so you can find out how) Olive decides to hike the rest of the way herself. Olive was my favorite character in Happy Trail, which was a pleasant surprise for me. I just loved her spirit. Happy Trail is my favorite smartypants romance book I have read yet!
