Sing Like No One's Listening by Vanessa Jones
3.0

Sing Like No One’s Listening is a young adult contemporary by author Vanessa Jones. I really enjoyed the story in Sing Like No One’s Listening. It was an emotional and heartfelt journey, and I really loved getting to know out main character Nettie. If you are a fan of emotional young adult contemporaries, then I think Sing Like No One’s Listening is a good book for you to check out. It releases today.

In Sing Like No One’s Listening we meet our main character Nettie as she is accepted into a prestigious performing arts school. The very same school that her mother once attended. We meet Nettie at a tough transition in her life. Not only is she going to a new school, but she is also still dealing with the loss of her mother. I felt Nettie’s emotions so poignantly throughout the story. Her grief manifested itself in different ways, but one of the most pressing was that it robbed her of her voice. Nettie has been unable to sing since her mother’s death, which is quite problematic when she is attending this school for her singing.

I love an academy school setting because as I have mentioned in past reviews, I think it lends itself well to learn a lot about our main characters. Not only Nettie, but with the other students and the way they all interact. Nettie faces all of her inner demons, but also some drama and hurdles from the other students and some resident mean girls, including a certain piano playing friend/romantic interest (Fletch). I loved Fletch! I thought he was great for Nettie. Everything that Nettie faced at school was important for her journey of healing and growth. I really loved this book. It felt like a warm hug while I was reading it. I wanted to grab Nettie and hug her through her pain, but watching her journey was sad at times, but overall it was really satisfying.

If you are a fan of realistic fiction stories that deal with topics like grief and emotional healing, then I think Sing Like No One’s Listening will be a satisfying read for you. I enjoyed reading Nettie’s story.
