Long but worth it

Impactful- haunting commentary on life in America and Britain, nuances of race, class and prejudice all interlinked by the experiences and the growth of two fascinating, vibrant characters. Loved every word of this book.

Stunning

So many excerpts and segments in this that I want to share with and discuss with young people or that made me feel things i didn't expect.

Language is excellent

Really enjoy the excellent language in this book but I don't enjoy reading about many of the themes covered. I also miss female protagonists and other Scottish marginalisations in this collection. This was a book club choice and it has certainly left me with plenty to discuss, but I would not reach for it again.

So much more than expected

Really enjoyed this book. Relevant and ties the social pressures and struggles of young women back to the time of witchcraft with a neat and engaging narrative form.

Excellently written - but not for me

This has been a difficult book to rate. The narrative form and skips through time are well executed and the writing is exactly as it needs to be to paint our picture of Clio and her character. However, I just didn't like or understand or sympathise with her at all. I found the book hard going and I found it hard to get into. While I appreciate all of the challenging themes the book approaches from afar, I wouldn't say I enjoyed it.

I would, however, recommend it as a read and I would read more books by Kristin Innes in future.
