So I do really enjoy this series but for some reason, it always takes me a while to get into the story. I also find it’s one of those books that is best read in long sittings. It’s hard to dip in and out because there’s a lot going on. Luc & Ava are great characters, although I do struggle with the will they, won't they trope. The chemistry does add some spice to the hunt for a violent killer though. The actual crime was very stressful with a heartbreaking start and a traumatic ending. So many emotions. I found the chapters from Quinn's POV so intriguing, especially trying to work out how her experience was tied to the terrifying murders. It can be read as a standalone but I think you get more from the main characters if you read them in order. Plus it’s just a great series. This is the first book I’ve read in this series but they can all be read as stand alones. The series is based in the same town with recurring characters but each book focuses on a different set of main characters. Sheriff Zac Evans has to team up with his ex wife Rachel when their cases overlap. She works in cold cases and a fingerprint from her investigation has been flagged up in Zac’s case. Pike has a twisted killer who seems to be reenacting brutal murders from the past. However, the police don’t seem to have a record of any previous killings. The murders are dark and Ivy knows how to set the scene. It’s a tense race to catch a sadistic killer although I did find the pace slow in places. The added romantic suspense really adds to the story. I will definitely be going back to read the first two books in the series. Damn this book is dark and disturbing. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. I love this series and the other books are pretty gruesome but this one is extra creepy. The main reason I adore this series so much is Alyssa and her family. They’re just so adorable and it makes a change to have the main character cop not be a grouchy loner. I also love Cord and Hal. We love to see a disabled character whose disability isn’t the plot point (although not using the term wheelchair bound would be nice). I hope we get a new addition to this series and get to see more of certain adorable characters. Now onto the crime part of this thriller. As I mentioned it’s dark, creepy, and full of suspense, it had me hooked. We get to see the story unfold from the POV of Alyssa, London, the kidnapper, and Carter. The chapters from London’s POV were absolutely terrifying and it really felt like we were there with her. Carter's POV shattered my heart and I may have shed a tear or two. I had no idea who the kidnapper was and every time I thought I’d figured it out I was proved wrong. The twists and turns kept me sucked in until the shocking reveal. I haven’t read any of this series before but I didn’t feel like I was missing any vital information and I will probably go back and read the rest at some point. In this book, there are two different cases/killers running simultaneously and both of them are the result of vigilantism. We get to see the cases unfold from Jo and both killers POV’s. It’s a nice easy read that isn’t particularly fast paced but still kept me guessing. It wasn’t a book I was desperate to pick up but once I was reading I did enjoy it.
I wanted a change of pace from my usual gritty murders but this went too far in the opposite direction. It was a bit of a snooze fest. Pretty much nothing happens for 75% of the book and then the ending is abrupt and disappointing. A lot of the book reads as a list of what Nikki does with her day. I would also class this as a book about self discovery and not a romance. In fact, very little romance occurs. Considering the book is called White Boyfriend, Mike doesn’t actually feature very much and there is very little about their interracial relationship. I loved Nikki’s friendship group but there were a lot of characters to keep track of and I did keep getting them muddled. There was also a lot of dialogue in places that didn’t flow particularly well. They talk about sex a lot but then any actual sex is just hinted at or purely stated as they had sex. I did like Nikki but it was frustrating that she kept making up problems in her head and even when she talked them out she chose to ignore everyone and keep believing in the imaginary issues. I normally love Helen Phifer’s work. I’ve read all of her other books and am a huge fan of her Morgan Brookes series, so I was excited to dig into this one. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me. I did enjoy the creepy is it a ghost or is it a person messing with you and Helen really sets the scene beautifully. I could really picture the house and felt like I was there. There were too many POV’s to keep up with though which made the story jump around. Stella was an odd character. Not only was she a terrible friend but everything she did made absolutely no sense. Maddy had weird anger issues and was extremely judgemental. I did love Glenys and Alfie though. Then the ending came out of the blue was extremely rushed and didn’t really make any sense. I just felt like I needed more of an explanation. I highly recommend checking out the rest of Helen’s books though. I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley
