I was so excited to read this! I loved A Curse So Dark and Lonely, and had a feeling I’d love A Heart So Fierce and Broken as much. I was not wrong.

I was instantly invested in this sequel. I wasn’t sure where we’d be going or how the story would unfold but I was surprised immediately by events, and characters developments as well as some characters struggles.

My allegiance bounced a few times as I was frustrated with Rhen but harper was a constant saving grace for his cause.

I loved that we got to see more of Noah and Jake. Strangely enough, steering away from Rhen and Harper allowed Greys narrative to be Centred and allows us to be angry with Rhen without his internal dialogue to sway... it was interesting to cast him as an antagonist.

Lia Mara was a beautiful addition. I felt her personality was lovely and her personal struggles were well written. The blooming love didn’t feel forced and I enjoyed watching it grow.

Introduction to new characters and places made me fall I love with this series all over again.

I feel this may be an unpopular opinion. But I just didn’t love this book like I’d hoped I would.

On April 20th 1999 Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris walked into Columbine Highschool and killed 13 people, injuring 21 more and devastating a community, a nation and the world.

On April 28th 1999 there was a school shooting in Taber Alberta, not too far from my city. It was only the second first fatal high school shooting in Canada and one of only three recorded. These two events left me with a new kind of sadness, fear and more questions than answers. (I actually had no idea that prior to this America had already had many school shootings, which makes my anger towards the recent continuation or mass shootings even worse.)

Columbine took me a long time to listen to. I kept finding myself angry, sad and anxious and had to continuously take a break. It was so emotionally draining. The narration switches back and forth between the “before”, the killers evolution toward murder and the “after”, the story of the survivors. The back and forth was so powerful. The contrast between the dark and the light, the pain and the recovery, the devastation and the possibility of hope. There was so much insight into everything beyond that tragic event in American History.

I cried more time’s than I care to admit. #readwithmarti they said... it’ll be fun they said. I definitely recommend this book but with a HUGE HUGE warning that it is traumatic and will NOT be for everyone.

This book was so beautiful. Following the story of Achilles through the eyes of Patroclus. An expansion and, I suppose update, on Homers Iliad. Exploring the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus which Plato implied was far more than platonic. They’re love portrayed was strong and easy, I loved the balance of Achilles between being a strong, brutal fighter and a soft, passionate, vulnerable lover.

I love mythology and I feel more should be written like this. It was captivating and accurate to other tellings. Aside from incredible writing I was impressed with the time Madeline put into writing and perfecting (over ten years, after five she scrapped and wrote again from scratch) to make sure she captures Achilles voice.

This was a long book. I listened to the audio so that helped with the length and following along. And A LOT of the names sound similar which could be confusing if you’re not paying attention.

This is a great middle grade fantasy about Alice Alexis Queensmeadows journey to find her father. She leaves Furthermore with her companion Oliver and the adventure ensues. This was such a fun book. Tahereh Mafi creates this beautiful, colorful, magical world and loads it with lessons and morals and emotion. The narrator gets involved in a Lemony Snickett sort of way and I love when they do that in kids books.

I so related to Alice and her stubborn sass. Gonna share some of my favorite quotes:
