CW: Racism, homophobia, cheating
It's Not Like It's a Secret has me feeling a lot of different ways. I want to say I enjoyed the listen, it felt inclusive and representative, but I am also not 100% sure that I enjoyed the story.
The plot development in the book was pretty even-paced and had moments of high-tension, but after finishing, I felt like it maybe was not the most realistic of outcomes. For me, it seems like forgiveness to this extent comes at a higher price than six poems...maybe? Who knows *inserts shruggy shoulders*
I think that the character development is decently crafted, however, I was kind of annoyed with some of the main character's decisions and thought processes. She never seemed to fully think out the consequences of her actions.
Maybe I am reading the book too harshly, but I really don't know where I stand, if I like it or if I'm annoyed with it. Maybe revisiting it in physical form would help...or not.

CW: Natural disaster, sexual assault, animal abuse
No Judgements is what I like to call a fluff read. It has a predictable, sappy romance with family drama and secrets.
I enjoyed the easiness of the read and the setting was unique. I also enjoyed the placement of the animal rescue plot. Something different and fun.
I was, however put off with the main characters attitude. Brie would be pinning over Drew Hartwell one minute, then he would say something to her and she would snap and act like he was the worst human. It got to be a little much for me.
I was also put off by the handling of the assault. It was underplayed, I believe, to show how the other characters perceived it, but even after understanding what happened, Brie's mother still seemed dismissive of it. Ad then the way Brie reacted with the gun go Kyle. That was...surprising to say the least.
I would say if you are looking for a mindless read, this could be a book try, but I wouldn't have super high expectations for it.

I love this book. The beautiful message about loving oneself and seeing the beauty in everyone. I really enjoy how this book incorporates art throughout the plot and talks about skin tones in terms of colors and mixed paint. I think this puts it in an understanding perspective for those younger readers.
I would highly recommend this read :)

This is a cute read that dives deep into friendship, romance, and self-discovery. The plot was not super in-depth or intense, but it was real. I felt like the events that happened to the characters are things that would actually happen to real-life high schoolers.
The characters are fun, witty, and full of emotions. The two main characters are very dynamic and created a story that I wanted to follow.

This is a wonderful read about inspirational and inspiring Black Americans and the amazing leaders who have come to shape our country. The lines, lyrics, and poems that are used to compliment Kwame Alexander's writing are emotionally-packed and bring the voices and stories to life. There is still much work to be done, but this is a great book to begin a conversation with young readers about powerful, strong, and inspirational Black Americans.

This is an adorable read about friendship and love. The use of bears seems appropriate and fitting for this book and the illustrations are fun! We were privileged enough to meet the author at a family reading night for my work, and he was wonderful to speak with and learn from. Overall, a fun book that brings in funny and silly moments to discuss bigger topics.

This book is absolutely adorable and passes along a great message that many young readers are working to understand - everyone needs personal space! Again, Jacob Grant's use of animals in this story feels appropriate. The conversation about Goat needing space and understanding that it is okay to need that space is soooooooo important for young readers to know. So many times young individuals are forced to embrace physical contact through hugs, high fives, holding hands, etc., but adults and role models should be letting them know that it is OKAY to need space.
Great story, great message.

This is another cute book by Jacob Grant. The story is funny and the characters are goofy, but the underlying message about friendship and change in relationships is a great one to pass along to young readers. I would definitely pick this one up again.

This is such an adorable read! The book portrays the message that no matter what, you matter, and I think this is such a great message to remember during this crazy time we are in.
The text is minimal, making it nice for new and young readers, but the message is fit for readers of all ages. I also absolutely adore the illustrations!
I originally picked up this book to read for my work's Family Reading Night, and after reading it, I knew it was going to be one of my favorite children's books of the year.
