This book loses a star because I wanted MORE!!! This is a mix of sleeping beauty and Snow White. Both princesses are in this story, and yet neither are what you’d expect. These princesses save themselves, there are no hero princes (not alive anyway) and the ending leaves the story unfinished... I will be thinking about what happens next and creating my own stories in my head. The illustrations were glorious and the twist on the classic fairy tale stories was very modern and very good. I just want more!
It took me far too long to finish this book. The first half of the book seemed disconnected, rushed, muddled to me. I'm not sure if that's because I kept putting it down, then picking it back up a week later, or not. I did not connect with any of the characters... until the 2nd half of the book. I enjoyed the 2nd half quite a bit and read it very quickly! Spoilers coming....
I'm not sure I enjoyed the sudden romance between Nadya and Malachaisz. Nadya literally went from despising him in one sentence/moment, to kissing him the next. I didn't notice the build up of those feelings. Maybe it's because I didn't enjoy and become engaged in the first part of the book? I really like Serefin's character. I loved that he was so misunderstood. He was the boy who did what he was told to do, became GREAT at it, then had to pretend the rest of the time. I wish there had been more of him. Maybe in the next book there will be! The world of the Saints and Gods was so interesting. Emily A Duncan did a wonderful job creating this crazy, weird, intoxicating world. I'm looking forward to the next book!
If I HAD to give it stars... I'd give the first half just 2 stars, and the second half 4.5 stars...

Finally! I have been wanting to read this book for a LOOONG time and I finally got to it. I should NOT have waited so long! I loved this book. There was just enough description and detail in the murderous scenes as well as the "sexy" scenes. It wasn't so much detail that I was grossed out during the killings, but just enough for me to cringe and enjoy! haha. Also, I didn't feel like a Smut-Seeker during the sex scenes. I was able to enjoy and appreciate what was happening. The character of Mia is such a great one! She is refreshingly different than ANY other character I've ever read. I love that she has multiple layers, and that they are not all laid out right at the beginning of the book; rather, we discover Mia over the course of the entire book. I know there is more to learn about her in the next two books, and I'm really excited about getting to know her better. I also know that no matter how well I feel I know her, I won't ever really know her... She is an enigma and that is one of the things that makes her fantastic. But let's not end this little review without mentioning my FAVORITE... Mister Kindly! Gosh I love that not-cat! His wit and smartass-ness made me literally laugh out loud. I wish he could be MY shadow companion.
So I read this book a few years ago and then Listened to it again for book club and just finished today. I like it better while listening. Still a good book but I don’t know if I will read anymore of the Dresden Files.
I listened to this audio book via audible. I really liked it! It had a great combo of sci-fi and dystopian reality. At least I’m going to call it “dystopian reality”. The story was believable in that it could actually happen. It had heart too and I geared up a few times. It didn’t shy away from gory details though and I gasped and reacted accordingly when those details were given. I liked the writing style and pace and I think I’ll be looking at reading more of Christina Henry’s books.
I can’t review right now... it’s all too fresh. I spent too long reading this because life got in the way and also, I didn’t want it to end. I know I have 1 more book to complete the trilogy but I don’t even want to start it because then it will eventually end. Ugh. I need to clear my head of this story, it was just too good
Very interesting dystopian idea! I like The whole premise of the “perfect” world and Scythes... I didn’t hate the romantic aspect but it lacked. Then Again, there are two more books (I think) in this series so the romance could become more. I had an idea that Faraday was not dead, so I was not entirely surprised when he showed up again. I just knew that neither Citra nor Rowan would be gleaned at the end so that was no surprise. I was glad that Rowan found a way to get rid of Goddard and his cronies. They just plain got on my nerves. I probably won’t continue with theme t books. There are too many books and not enough centuries...
Ok, not for me. The story was interesting but there were way too many tangents and it went on forever. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it as much as I expected to.
What a great, dramatic reading of this book! The story was not the typical Vampire story, and yet had all the classic "vampire" things... with a twist of the love between her and her victim. I loved all the background noises, the different characters played by different actors, and to top it all off, the very last word "goodbye" from Carmilla herself... it gave me chills.
