Listen to the audiobook!

Fun, great ideas, loved it :)

More of a 3.8 than a 4 but oh well.

It was fine, but I don’t know if it was the pace or the fact I read it as an audiobook (though Carey Mulligan’s voice will be lulling me to sleep on bad nights) but it just lost steam.

It felt a bit preachy at the end, and a tad too fantastical for a story that had generally been pretty grounded emotionally. Not sure if that’s just where I am but oh well.

Cute enough story and premise with nice writing that it would be good enough for a read.

Not really but kind of a spoiler - it takes a little while to get to the apocalypse.

I wish I had known that so I could have enjoyed the beginning a bit more, but it was a fun interesting ride with unique characters who you just want to study.

Hmmm... I’m not sure how I feel about this book exactly. Like is it a 3.9 or a 4.1? I don’t know. I ended up reading each of the three parts in essentially separate settings which I think helped with the confusing change in pace (as I didn’t know they were written originally as separate novellas). Just know that each part is a very different voice and part of the overarching story, and enjoy!

On the one hand, I really enjoyed the comparison between us as humans and nature. It was written in an interesting and vivid way, and somewhat grounded in a way that separates it from “surreal” sort of fiction by Kafka.

On the other hand, something didn’t quite come together. I’m not sure if I wanted more weird, more obvious changing on tone between parts, a longer or shorter story, I just don’t know. But it’s interesting and I’ll be thinking about it, even if only for a little while longer.

Unlike others, I didn’t mind how far the story would go as it felt purposefully done (not simply gratuitous). Maybe also it helps to have an understanding of the mental illnesses in the story to be able to enjoy it - anorexia, obsessions and intrusive thoughts from OCD, trauma and depression.

Looooove it!! An essential read for anyone interested in what makes us human.

Loved every moment I cried. I thought the pacing between the parts was odd but it helped me to break up reading so I could enjoy it for longer.

Amazing audiobook performance (5/5), lovely expansive story which I appreciated the more I read, though it definitely has its faults (3.5/5)

Agreed with others that the beginning is slow, and the novel is very Eurocentric which is more than just a shame when it expands over 300 years of atrocities. There was also no real growth from Addie, which is kind of confusing - though I don’t know if this was on purpose because of her curse (and not being able to grow and mature), or simply because it wasn’t the focus and got lost in the drafting.
