Enjoyable in some respects but generally everything is too perfect for the protagonist. It's got a bit of a prepper fanatic / military wannabe feel to it but I'll probably listen to the others at some point. Leah in particular is way above her age.
Bonus marks for lots of original ideas and a good mix of urban and fantasy; on the whole enjoyable. Something was a little lacking and I can't quite put my finger on it, I think perhaps the characters themselves were a little flat or dull or maybe I just missed having a bit more humour. Either way I'm hopeful about book 2.
I enjoyed about a third of this book the rest was a bit of a slog. I think my biggest problem was with the readability; I read a fair amount and have a decent vocabulary but found myself having to look words up frequently, the sentence structure was also often needlessly complex which made the whole thing more hard work than I'd hoped for.
There was a lot more history and information about various Native American tribes than I expected which wasn't really what I was after, however a lot of the more recent and present day information was interesting. Strangely enough (perhaps unfairly) I also found myself not liking the author/narrator; I found many of his thoughts, opinions and behaviours jarring, so that didn't help matters.

A generous 3 stars as I'm still optimistic enough to read ths next in the series in the hope that the story will pull together. Based on the first book alone I enjoyed the premise and the possibilities it presents but the logic is inconsistent and the narrative confusing. I found myself having to reread passages because I just couldn't make sense of them. At one point I double checked that I hadn't inadvertently picked up a book from the middle of the series to see if that explained my confusion (it didn't)
