Most of this book is filled with slut-shaming language, some homophobia and transphobia, some bigotry, and just a general misunderstanding of any not-religious relationships.
The only thing that I could even remotely agree with actually took me by surprise. At the end they equate a woman's worth with a one hundred dollar bill. When it's brand new and clean and untouched, it's worth $100. When it's been through some stuff and is now nasty and used and dirty, it's still worth $100. Yeah, they're still slut shaming women with that, but it's better (marginally) than the used chewing gum comparison I was expecting.
This book is garbage in regards to actual relationship advice, defining love, or anything useful.

I give this book 4.0 stars out of 5.0 because there were a few errors, but mostly because they brother-sister thing squicks me out even if they aren’t actually brother-sister. I did very much enjoy the book, but some things irked me.

We start out with Clark Treasure, son of a prostitute or Tarnished Silver, stealing from one of his mother’s clients. No big deal, until he steals and drinks absinthe that isn’t really absinthe. The potion he drinks gives him some interesting necromancing abilities such as seeing ghosts and being able to talk with them, bringing back from the dead people who have just passed, and (if he has just brought someone back) the ability to kill someone. It’s a neat take on necromancy and I quite like it.I give this book 4.0 stars out of 5.0 because there were a few errors, but mostly because they brother-sister thing squicks me out even if they aren’t actually brother-sister. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the first book and some for this book!
I give this book 3.5 out of 5.0 stars because, again, there are errors that really should have been fixed already, but the book is still easily readable. I don’t know if there’s another book coming because the end of this one did seem a bit final, but if there is a third book then I will definitely be reading it. In spite of the things that are wrong with the book,
There’s also a separate short story called “A Treasure Tale” at the end of this book. It’s from before the first book, so it’s more a prequel than anything, but there is a part that implies maybe it isn’t a prequel when the story references Amethyst’s first kidnapping where she was locked in a shed.
I give the short story 4.0 out of 5.0 stars because it entertained me, but still had an error. It was a pretty easy save for Clark, and that’s okay. I would love to see more of his adventures while he was on the run.

So the last book ended with Clark and Amethyst foolishly getting married. Yes, I said foolishly. They haven’t even bother to tell Garth and Georgette Treasure that they know they aren’t half-siblings and that Clark knows Eric Grisham is his dad, not Garth. But they get married… DUMB! So dumb. This is easily the most foolish decision they’ve made in both books.I give this book 3.5 out of 5.0 stars because, again, there are errors that really should have been fixed already, but the book is still easily readable. I absolutely loved this conclusion! The end was actually a surprise that I didn't expect and there was something Kyja did that I fully expected, but not the way she did it. All in all, this is a series I will be rereading and recommending to others!
I imagine these prequel stories will make much more sense once I read the main series. 😺
This was a fascinating story and I'm curious to see if the Pirate Lord shows up in the main books.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like the healer will potentially be making an appearance in the main series. These prequels seem like "first meeting" stories.
I'm enjoying these prequels so much!! This one was delightful!
As much as I enjoyed this book, I'm really glad that I read the prequel short stories first because, having done that, I knew her skills were real. If I had read this first, I would have felt there was a lot of exaggeration because she isn't really shown to be skillful in this book. There are mentions of her skills and some demonstrations, but not like in the prequels.
That being said, I still would have very much enjoyed the book and I certainly am glad that I finally got around to reading it!!
