Woke up far too early on my day off Friday (boo) but read this one cover to cover while sipping my tea, and it was cute!

It’s a sweet story of a teenager chasing her dream, finding her confidence, reconnecting with an old friend/crush, and learning to stand up for herself.

A top contender for best book of 2020, for SURE. ⁣

I was so impressed by this one— the writing is beautiful, the story is so captivating and compelling, the themes are complex (TW: addiction, overdose, depression, racism), the tension between faith and science is explored thoughtfully... it’s just incredibly well done literature. ⁣

This book exists (and excels) in the tension— between living and just surviving, between sobriety and addition, between science and religion, between Ghana and America, and so much more. It’s impressive and important. ⁣

Started it, was nearly instantly hooked, and couldn’t put it down. ⁣

This book is stunning. I was transported to a whole new world from the opening pages, and the voice of teenage Nigerian girl Adunni was incredibly, powerfully written. ⁣

Her story will break your heart over and over (it’s not easy to read of a teenager being sold for marriage to a much older man and enduring horrible things at his hand, or of the abuse she suffered, or of the hard and painful realities of her culture and community) but this book important and impeccable and impressive. ⁣

this book is poetic and powerful, beautiful and emotional. A story told in verse of a daughter and a family, navigating teenage years and learning to own your voice, faith and doubt, and finding your way in the world. I loved it. Acevedo is amazing and I will read every word she writes!
