Transcendent Kingdom
by Yaa Gyasi
A top contender for best book of 2020, for SURE.
I was so impressed by this one— the writing is beautiful, the story is so captivating and compelling, the themes are complex (TW: addiction, overdose, depression, racism), the tension between faith and science is explored thoughtfully... it’s just incredibly well done literature.
This book exists (and excels) in the tension— between living and just surviving, between sobriety and addition, between science and religion, between Ghana and America, and so much more. It’s impressive and important.
