Oof. That one hit hard, kids. That was so powerful and moving and I won't lie to y'all, I cried the entire time I was reading it. I don't usually reach for poetry but this was absolutely amazing and I know I will definitely go back and reread sections in the future!

I love any form of secret identity mixed with someone who literally has no idea, so I was living for this!
[set after The Summer Palace!]

I'm not big on novellas that come after a series is finished, or on epilogues in general. But, this was cute and the perfect way to end my binge of the trilogy!

This was absolutely brutal. While I was reading I was trying to think of a word that summed this book up, and 'brutal' was what kept coming to mind, but as I was getting towards the end, I decided on 'invasive'. This wasn't a bad book by any means, it's just shocking and a lot to get used to, especially if you don't know what you're getting yourself into.
This book is very controversial because of its subject matter, and I'm assuming also because of the circumstances of the main character. But, I think that because this is a made-up world, there is only so much you can criticize. This isn't "the real world" or "our world", this happens to be a world where the royalty is harsh and brutal and thinks of the lower class/servants as property. So, know that there isn't much space to breathe with this book, and it's rarely going to make you smile, if ever.
I think what I came away from this book recognising most, is that C S Pacat is a very skilled writer, she writes about *many* horrible things in this book but never sympathises with the attacker, or makes the reader think that what happens is okay. And, I think that's really important. She's not advocating for these acts by writing about them, but writing about characters in a world that accepts these things as fact, and explaining to the reader (and also the characters) why they're not.
Major triggers for rape (also, rape for sport or entertainment) as well as whipping (until the victim is almost dead), as well as underage sex/relationships
TW/CW: rape, slavery, sexual abuse, torture, violence, paedophilia, whipping, death, murder,

I'm not gonna lie, the whole reason I picked this up is because of my love for the show, which I've recently started watching. I am having a lot of fun watching the show and just finished season 1 so I figured I would give the book a go, and expected to dnf it a few chapters in. So, you can imagine how shocked I am that I enjoyed this so much and am actually considering moving straight on to book 2!
There are a lot of characters and SO MANY time jumps (for reference, Demelza is 13 at the start of the book and 17 at the end). I definitely prefer the show but I really enjoyed the writing so I think once I've finished season 2 I might give the next book a try!
TW: alcoholism, "boys will be boys", child death, injury, cockfighting, dog fighting, sexism

I wasn't expecting much from this except a fun and addicting read with some fun plot twists and characters. And while it certainly was that, this book was actually amazing! I would definitely consider reading this again in the future! This was so much fun and had that sort of addictive vibe you get from drama-filled reality shows, I couldn't put it down. I know it's only January but I think I've already found one of my favourite reads of 2020!
