Haru, Part 1

Joe Latham

The artwork was in a bit of a different style than I usually see, but Yama was almost cuter than I could stand.

The story can get a bit dark, and a part of me was almost tempted to not finish. I'm so glad I stuck through to the end though, because there was a bright, hopeful ending. A powerful story of friendship and family, along with even deeper themes and broader appeal. I'm really looking forward to the next edition, and to seeing how they'll find a way to return the heart, and what might happen afterwards.

The story might become something with a message and be entertaining and intriguing and all that. But right now, I am bored. I don't like the writing. I don't care for the characters and their communication is unengaging. I have no want to read the story to learn what becomes of anyone or anything.

Sorry to this story, it's probably me, not you.

Haru' reminded me of Frodo and Sam's journey to Mordor. It was beautifully illustrated, but sometimes the storyline was hard to follow. When reading middle grade graphic novels I'm always surprised with how dark the storyline can be. Kids will fall in love with Haru and Yama as they tackle bullies, find new friends, and head out on new adventures.

Read along with my six year old. It’s cute and I’m enjoying sharing it with him.
