One of my favorites of the Narnia books. The ending really gets me. When I was young I first loved Narnia then hated it for the allegory. Now, it’s almost a spiritual read, seeing myself in Edmund or Lucy or taking Aslan’s words as a challenge for myself. I understand Narnia’s critics, but sometimes you need beautiful, child-like lessons to grow.
Hannah Coulter is a powerful, thought-provoking read and a tender reflection on the importance of place and community. This makes me wish I had what Hannah does. I highly recommend the audio book. Perhaps because it feels like an oral history, I found the story much more compelling as an audio book than on paper.
I really liked the Fires of Heaven. This is the point where I sort of started dragging last time around and I had to renew at least once this time round before I got through. But I’m didn’t have the audio book until I was over half way done and I’m also reading about 6 other books so I will admit that my attention is divided. I really like the interweaving of stories and stories meeting, but I will admit that sometimes I want a shorter book.
I don’t think I have the words for this book. Highly speculative, strangely familiar, and very relevant to today. Definitely read it!
I tried my best and got a couple chapters in, but I found the writing/voice of the main character very annoying and I just couldn't make myself read further when there were other books waiting.
Beautiful, satisfying, and definitely pulled on my heartstrings. Can’t wait to read the full novel!
I got to talk with Maurice Manning recently for work, and he is such a thoughtful, kinda lover of nature and people that that inspired me to check out some of his poetry, despite often having a hard time connecting to poetry. I have to say, I’m a big fan of his language and storytelling. He really makes each of the poems in this collection a story that revolve around familiar themes to those who are familiar with Kentucky and Appalachia. I really enjoyed reading this, and the poems draw you in and it’s very hard not to finish the collection in one sitting. This one is all that my library has on ebook, but I’m definitely going to be reading more of Manning’s poetry!
