This volume feels more like a link between two, rather than it’s own thing, but I enjoyed getting some more backstory and it led into some action that really makes me wonder what’s coming next.
Looking forward to reading on.

Interesting book.
Lots about pre-conquest rulers which I enjoyed. More about Anglo-Saxons than the Brief History of Anglo-Saxons book.

I’ll have to reread it to be sure, but I think I loved it.

It felt slow paced, but in a relaxing way, not a dull way. The characters felt so believable in their world. The Judge was menacing and The Kid had more depth to him than most nameless protagonists. The whole gang told a story of a world and I loved my time in it.
Best read of the year for me.
It’s my first time reading McCarthy but it won’t be my last.

High point again.
I’ll avoid spoilers but there’s a character we learn more about in this volume that I thought I really didn’t care for, but by the time we’re learning of their past, I really wanted to know more.

Brief history of Anglo-Saxons, but a detailed history of Christianity in Britain.
Don’t get me wrong, they called it the dark ages for a reason and there were some interesting insights into the time in this book, but I was disappointed that there wasn’t more about Anglo-Saxon life in the book. There are mentions of Paganism and Woden, but no discussion on what that meant to the people.
