This was a decent read I was intrigued with the mystery and how it unraveled. It actually felt like a movie playing in my mind. I could see this becoming a movie adaptation on hallmark or Lifetime. Ya know not a movie of substance but something you watch when there’s nothing else on. This is the end of my good review.

The unreliable female lead due to substance abuse/alcohol use trope isn’t my favorite, in most books it feels like lazy writing- this one included. One of the plot twists was predictable within the first few chapters despite the author’s attempts at red herrings. So many plot holes and situations that just does not make sense!

Digging Up Love

Chandra Blumberg

DID NOT FINISH: 37%

Good premise but the constant miscommunication and lack of communication between one another and their families was over the top. The characters are supposedly 30 years old but it reads like a YA romance. It wasn’t what I was expecting and I struggled to continue 37% through. Honestly, I skimmed the rest to see what happens and still wasn’t overly impressed. Cute cover though! And wish we seen more of her baking in her own shop

The ending was everything!!! When I say I cheered out loud at that twist! What?!  I felt empowered and proud! Loved the scene of Bree washing her hair following the event it was realistic and felt her emotions so deep in my soul. Can’t wait for the sequel

Everyone doesn’t have to be on the front line, there are others roles you can take on during a revolution or a cause that are just as important. This is one of my take always from Bitter’s story. There’s so much I love and appreciate from this book as I did with Pet. But first, the nod to Assata Shakur and the Black Panthers, then the pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement. When coming across Assata I said to myself “Wait, hold up!” And seeing the connections of Assata’s goals, programs, assistance in their community strongly confirmed my thoughts.

Spoilers moving forward:

Also, seeing a child abuser as a child themselves definitely ties further into the lesson from Pet, angels can be monsters and sometimes angels have to be monsters. But it was actually the first part for this particular character. I wanted to side with Hibiscus’ character but then remembered what they’ve done and I can’t unsee it.

*Squeals* I am so happy for Nya!!!! Seeing her growth in self confidence and spreading her wings has been a joy to read. Seeing her from ‘A Princess in Theory’ to now makes my heart burst with joy. The romance was sweet and the sex scenes were great! And I appreciate so much that this wasn’t a black women solves the white love interests issues and fixes him trope.
