This is the first book in the Cormac Reilly series, but the second book chronologically. [b:The Sisters|47956524|The Sisters|Dervla McTiernan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1567071987l/47956524._SX50_.jpg|73126548] is an Audible Original (and available only on Audible) and takes place about 10 years prior to this novel, when Detective Sergeant Carrie and her sister Aifric were first starting out in their careers.

Compared to The Sisters, this book is exceedingly better. I am glad I read this book despite the fact that I had not been keen on its prequel. This book does not rely whatsoever on any of the storyline in The Sisters, so if you do not have an Audible subscription, you are not missing out.

The story is tragic in many ways, and especially in Aisling's story. Aisling has just found out that she is pregnant, although she is not ready to be a mother due to just beginning her career as a surgeon, and then her boyfriend Jack is found dead, seemingly having killed himself. Then, there is the story of Jack's childhood with his sister Maude, neglected by an alcoholic mother and suffering physical abuse. Even more tragedy develops as the story unfolds. These dark themes may be difficult for some readers, but McTiernan addresses them delicately.

Despite the darkness, McTiernan's writing is crisp and powerful. Her characters have depth, and the protagonists are strong and dedicated. Although the characters have suffered, there is a positivity in each of them that makes them inspirational. The story is original and well-developed, absolutely beautiful against the tragic themes.

The narrator of the audiobook, Aoife McMahon, did a phenomenal job. Her inflections were perfect for the tone of each dialogue. Characters are easily discernable. She is a large reason why I have ordered the next book in the series on Audible. I truly look forward to continuing this series.

I received a free copy of this short story from Prolific Works. (Update: I also received a free copy from Voracious Readers Only.) Free copies are also available to those who sign up for the author's newsletter on her website, here. Below is my honest review.

This is a quick read, taking a mere 15 minutes. Reading the synopsis, I was immediately turned off by the multiple grammatical and punctuational errors; however, I chose to read it anyway based on its length, believing I could still get a good grasp on the author's writing style. (I hope the author doesn't mind that I corrected the errors in the Goodreads synopsis, though these errors are still present in the Prolific Works and Amazon synopses.)

Evie has grown up in her elder sister Jenny's shadow. Typically, this would cause a rift between sisters, but the two appear to be very close. Confusingly close. Aged 24, Jenny has successful employment as a model and is dating an incredibly attractive musician named John. However, John is drawn to Evie from the first. The climax will take you by surprise, even if you think you've figured out how this quick tale ends.

I learned on the Bastien books when I was a child. I started with the Primer Level at age 6, and when my boyfriend's daughter expressed an interest in learning to play the piano, I dug out my old Bastien books. Imagine my delight when I found that my beloved piano book is still in print after 25 years and I was able to get her her own copy for Christmas :) We only have her twice a year, for Christmas and summer break, but all she wants to do when she is with us is play the piano from these books. I would highly recommend these books for piano teachers. Based on my experience, this book is appropriate for children as young as 5 to learn from. (When my parents tried to enroll my little sister in piano lessons at age 4, she was not able to pick up the concepts or concentrate long enough to get the most out of her lessons.) The series has a collection of main books broken down by skill level, as well as supplementary technique books for each level. I remember hating the technique books (technique is so BORING when you're a kid) but I am extremely thankful for them now.

After watching the movie, I purchased the sheetmusic to the score immediately. Dario Marianelli is an incredibly talented pianist.

This book was promoted by Online Book Club today. It is currently free on Amazon (and it is available on Kindle Unlimited, too). It is a quick read of just 84 pages.

By no means is this meant to be a textbook on behavior modification. The author has chosen to focus on one element within the realm of behavior modification in order to help people become more reflective on how they can respond to certain situations in more positive ways. He provides many examples, anecdotes, and personal experiences to show his Stimulus-Space of Time-Response model in action.

In essence, he teaches the reader that when a stimulus occurs, such as a fender-bender, we have a moment to reflect on how we want to react, and then we respond accordingly. We have the choice to fly into a rage and verbally assault the other driver, or we can take a moment to breathe and choose to approach the other driver calmly in order to exchange insurance information. A few of the examples provided seemed a bit far-fetched or without factual basis, but they still illustrated his point.

Even if you believe yourself to be a rational person, this book will likely surprise you with a situation you may not have thought of before. In addition to teaching the reader how to respond to stimuli, he also teaches the reader how to find joy in every scenario using his model. For instance, even if your team loses a game, you can still "take the win" by recognizing that your team took more points than they have all season.

If for no other reason than to reflect on how you can be a happier person and have a positive impact on others, this quick book is worth a read.
