Underwhelming

Good, well written, yet at times borrring. Though that's probably more my problem... BUT with the way reviews raved about this memoir, I was expecting more. Yes, Westover has many impressive accomplishments to her name, especially considering her upbringing. However, I have either read or watched a movie/documentary of this story unfold (ridiculously similar stories) a dozen times already. It seems to be the over-done Saga (in this case a true story) of a black sheep bred from a poor, religiously zealous, backwoods, white folk family turned sophisticated and enlightened Educator Extraordinaire.

This was fun, well written and easy to binge read! I especially liked the references/homage to the scream queen actresses and their slasher films. I found that the commentary on how women are treated (the horrors they go through) poorly verses how their abusers (often male) are elevated in society, right on the nose; not exactly digging deep on the subject. Though that didn't bother me because I didn't take this book too seriously, slasher movie premise and all. I enjoyed the humor and how Hendrix ticked nearly every slasher movie trope.

I love Gilmore Girls and Lauren Graham. That love extends to this book as well. Why? Beacuse I love Gilmore Girls and Lauren Graham

A nightly read with my kiddos. They're monster lovers and especially enjoy the "I-Spy" aspects of the book
