I really loved this book at the beginning, but as I continued reading that changed (this could be because it took me months to finish). I loved the academic aspect of it--following graduate students and professors was amazing and very very relatable--but the romance and everything else quickly because uninteresting. Overall, I can see why a lot of people enjoyed this book and while my expectations were not met, it's still a solid read.

I appreciate having a main character who has been through an abusive relationship and is working on it and on her road towards healing. hated every other aspect of this book though.

I loved this book so much! I genuinely feel like it just cured the months-long reading slump I have been suffering through. My favorite parts about it were the author's phenomenal writing style that just kept me very interested in the historical aspects of the book the entire time while making it easily digestible, and the way gender was represented/showcased in the book. It's very easy to tell that this book is written by a trans author because without even trying, you can *feel* Zhu's tension within herself on every single page. Everything about this book from the writing, to the characters, to the tense expectations I had the entire time was *chefs kiss*. I will ~definitely~ be reading book 2/more from this author <3333 LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!

This was a very emotional read. My favorite parts were when the grandpa discussed falling in love with / his love for his wife. I really loved seeing the bond between a grandfather and a grandchild bc I haven’t seen many things focus on such a relationship.
