A bit of a slow burn with not quite the ending that I wanted but I’m always intrigued with how queerness is portrayed in historical fiction and I think this did a great job with being subtle yet powerful on that aspect.

This is super cute and I also liked that there was an in-depth questioning period from our female leads.

I was prepared for this to be dark but I was definitely still shocked at parts of this (especially considering this is a shorter book. This is actually one of the books that if it were as long as Anna Karenina or Pachinko I wouldn't be mad about it because it was already so rich in history that I wanted more.

Definitely YA but also discusses important aspects of identity and doesn’t sugarcoat the existing prejudices in the queer community in a way that is easily digestible.

I wish that I got a bit more regarding our main character's overall family dynamic, but otherwise, I love how raw and relatable this book is. I think this should be an essential read for twenty-somethings trying to figure out their life and navigating relationships, or at least an essential read for bisexuals that feel like they need a bit of extra validation that they belong in queer spaces.

I don't remember the last time that I read a book where the main characters were animals, but this book definitely awakened an interest in me to seek out more books like this one.

Jesus, some of these poems got REALLY dark. I can also see some inspiration for some of Burton's characters from the drawings in this and now I want to rewatch those movies.

Really more of a 3.5 for the overall plot but I can’t deny the beautiful artwork so that gives my rating a boost! I did also learn a lot about the daily life of someone taking part of Ramadan, so I would absolutely recommend this for someone wanting to learn more about Muslim culture.

TBH I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, but I will say that I was impressed with the direction this book ended up taking. There were definitely some parts that got me emotional, and I could see a lot of people relating to certain characters and situations. Hoping that she writes more novels!

It's so insane reading something like this where we see how different the world was in terms of what a 'woman's role' was, and the methods taken for mental illness. This book made me feel both glad that I live in a modern society, and heartbroken for the women that had to suffer for us to get to where we are now.
