We listened to this one just before our trip to Bannack, Montana (a real ghost town that is now a state park). It did a great job of giving the kids some context. And it was just fun.
This book gave me so much to think & talk about, and I even went back and re-listened to the chapter on relationships after I was done. Her stuff about the Anticipating/experiencing/memory self (and not letting the lazy or stressed “experiencing self” overrule the other two) especially hit home for me.
I hoped the kids would like this on audiobook but they just didn’t get into it. Zero retention.
This was a lot of fun, but not quite as delightful as My Lady Jane was.
Really enjoyed this, listening on audiobook made a long drive fly by. BUT. I couldn’t get over this: “Hey, you know the two vulnerable, under-threat characters that we have been obsessively guarding? Well, now that our compound is under attack from unknown assailants, let’s all split up and leave these two ALONE. No way could this all be about getting to them.” Yeah, ok. I think the author should have tried harder to find a more plausible way to separate Meg & Sam from the group.
I thought this was fine, but my kids laughed hysterically. Always happy to find a winner for listening to in the car.
Yeah, I’m a sucker for the “Colgan formula.” (Young woman leaves soul-sucking office job/life and discovers her real calling is to run a small business in a charming locale, where she also unexpectedly discovers Real Love). Seeing it play out in London w/cupcakes is fine by me!
