I have just finished this masterpiece and I am in utter tears. Every urge of mine wants to tell you this is a fantasy book, but it is a children's historical fiction book with so much magic that it makes it feel like magic is a part of our world.
It is a celebration of the origins of cinema and the first who dared to make films: magicians who knew that with a camera they had the opportunity to create magic in new forms. It is a story of success, and failure, and a reminder to never give up on your passions and dreams. The formatting of this book is incredible, and it feels almost at times like you are reading a silent movie!!
Cinematic, heart wrenching, heartwarming. Please read it.
ALSO A QUICK EDIT: Cornelia funke LOVES THIS BOOK, and after reading this I really tied similarities between this and the thief lord in terms of magical elements!! I completely forgot this snippet of information so its fascinating to me that one book made me think of the other!

just watched the film and had a lot of questions, so immediately I had to read this. A fascinating look about dealing with the death of a loved one (which lacks in the sinister tone that the film offered)
i'm going to just say I've finished this, there's like half an hour of the audiobook left.
The mistake I made with this was listening to the audiobook. Stephen fry is great, but I kept thinking if I was reading this I would have read this in much more of a monotone with little expression, and I think that made the humour a lot less dry and not as funny as it should have been?
I did have some moments I enjoyed, but ultimately I really didn't enjoy it that much. It was just meh for me. Its really hard to tell with audiobooks, but I may have bumped this up a star if I read the book. difficult to tell however, regardless I don't see myself continuing the series any time soon.
