Portia is an accountant who has NO interest in getting married, mainly because her mom (who was a seggs worker) was awful but also because she just hasn’t liked any of the men she’s ever met and she wants to be independent. Kent, the MMC, is a real-live cowboy, who worked for Rhine back in Virginia City and eventually found his way to the family at their Arizona hotel.

Like most Bevvie Jenks, this book is FULL OF PLOTS. If starts with Rhine, Eddy, Portia and Regan escaping mob violence and ends with a huge plot happening. I loved the exploration of Portia’s relationship with her mom and how that informed her relationship with Kent. I loved how sweet patient and h0rny Kent was. I also loved all of the foreshadowing with Regan, who is the FMC in Tempest.

Okay Jane is amazing but Oliver was very frustrating. I was annoyed with both of them for a lot of the book even though I was rooting for them. Anjan and Emily, on the other hand - ALL THE STARS. I love it when a book has a secondary romance and Anjan and Emily are tops.

I just wish Oliver hadn’t waited until the end of the book to realize he was being a dolt.

Who knew a Jenkins character study could burn this slowly and this brightly? I loved the deep exploration of identity through Rhine, and Eddy is a wonderful female main character. Rhine’s choice to pass as white and the repercussions of that choice and later ones cut deeply throughout this book. As with most Jenkins we also get some detailed history lessons all in the setting of an old west town. The audio narration by Kim Staunton is absolutely worth a listen as well!

Why spend hours on a contract negotiation at a sex club and not establish safe words and/or the kinds of scenes you want to act out? This couple goes through so much trouble to have very vanilla hotel sex that includes a kind of scary miscommunication that only prevents the MMC assaulting the FMC because he notices she’s “actually scared” and not just “role playing.” 🙄

Um, I am UNDONE by this book, to the point where I barely know where to begin. We have a duke who understands his privilege, a woman with a HUGE secret, found family, marriage of convenience, some of the most poignant seggs scenes (AGAIN!) and a strong anti-aristocracy vibe? UGH PERFECTION. No Notes.

Heavier on action, but still very swoony. I loved the Tang Dynasty China setting, and Ai Li was a fun FMC - the sixth child and a girl with a lot of secrets! The third act breakup/ conflict was a little too drawn out for my taste but the ending was really satisfying.
