I was loving it but I’m not in the mood for dense science fiction at the moment.

An 'it's me, not you' situation. The protagonist was compelling and the world was fascinating. A mix of futuristic dystopian technology and traditional witch magic which I've never read before. If only my hang-up about the graphic blood depiction hadn't got me.

Context:
• The protagonist relives the memory of her ancestor, a slave on a sugar cane plantation, being tied to a tree and whipped. Her lover is shot and killed in front of her. She dies from her exhaustion after weaponising her blood (through magic) to murder their abusers.
• In the opening scene, the protagonist sits in a bath of her own period blood for a ritual. She later pours drops of her relative's blood on her open eye.

Dull, slow, and a little confusing. I'm usually here for any kind of Slavic mythology, but it didn't keep my attention.

Immediately disliked the writing style. Younger tone than I personally prefer. I also have no interest in surfing, and the protagonist is a hardcore surfer. I feel like this is not going to be the book for me. 

I’m also falling out of love with ya contemporary lately, so I might just be in the wrong mood  🤷🏼‍♀️

I didn't even make it through the prologue  🤷  It's just not my jam. I've never seen the movies so I honestly don't know what it's about. Elves and rings and volcanoes? Something like that. I didn't even enjoy The Hobbit, so I'm not putting myself through it.
