A strong story with an abrupt ending

I listened to the audiobook and it enhanced my experience with this book. It was a bit slow at points and I felt the character development was flat. I enjoyed the historical accuracy and the thought put into the plot and characters.

This was so beautifully written

This book is like an old friend who you don’t quite understand but love all the same.

I listened to the audiobook for this one and in some ways I wish I had the physical book especially when discussing the scents. I want to do more research to understand the context. It was so poetic and grounded.

I heard great things about the book but I did not realize how emotionally invested I would become. I evaded any spoilers and I’m so glad because the twists and turns made the book a page-turner for sure.

Update: I originally rated this five stars. I just had a deep discussion during a book club and I’m feeling more critical about the way the author tries to tackle too many perspectives and plot twists.

Well researched and generally enjoyable

I listened to the audio book. I found this fascinating and inspiring. The dirty and hard truth. I want to dig in deeper!

This is the older and better cousin of Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I love how many themes are juggled so easily. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, honestly.

Although I actually did not know who Harvey was before I picked this up…I found myself really compelled by his story. Of course, I highly recommend the audiobook.
