Damn okay, props to Gilliland for taking a character I thought I disliked and turning her into one of my favorites! I'm glad she wrote Teal's story, because this completely changed how I viewed her. This girl has gone through so much shit and Carter just loves her so tenderly (helloooo new book boyfriend??).
Much like the previous book, this story shines through character relationships not only between the love interests, but sisters and family as well. It also features an enjoyable use of the friends-to-lovers and fake marriage trope!

I’m so glad I pushed through the slow start to this because it turned into the perfect, stormy, horror-light romantasy I was wanting! It’s like if The Lighthouse merged with the Anderson’s Little Mermaid with a romantic emphasis…and actually ended happily lol. Really enjoyed this one!

This might be my new favorite YA romance 🥹 It’s just so sweet, rich with Vietnamese culture and food, and has such a tender story about family, learning new truths, and growing up. I’ll admit the ending felt a bit rushed but overall, this is just such a cute story!

An interesting addition to this new genre of analyzing and criticizing the wellness industry, albeit the ending ultimately falls short.

I did get wrapped up in the mystery that emerges in the middle of the book, but feel like the shift in focus to solving it softened the impact of the rest of the building plotlines. It certainly demonstrates that ultimately, wellness has been swallowed by capitalism, and there will always be a She-EO to girlboss, gaslight, and gatekeep their way to the top.

Once I got over my surprise at the tone of this book (don’t be deceived by the cozy-cute cover! There are some serious themes in this like domestic abuse and emotional manipulation), I quite liked it.

The little AOL chat exchanges at the start of each chapter made me reminisce on my own history with IM and internet chatrooms. The way teenage Sage and Tenn flirted was spot on! I couldn’t help laughing fondly at the cutesy exchanges and old school emojis :)

As I mentioned above, there are some heavier topics in this that I did not expect but were handled fairly well. A lot of those themes aren’t quite fully resolved though, especially since this is Sage’s book. I’m invested enough I’ll be picking up the next one, which is Teal’s story, and I hope the author is able to expand on the conversations started in this one.

Overall, the relationships (both familial and romantic) are the star of the show in this book, so if you’re looking for that and some magical realism, I recommend this one!

This one is just not grabbing my interest right now and it feels like a chore every time to pick up. Perhaps I'll come back to it later but there are just too many other books to read right now!
