I have never played world of Warcraft, nor have I any idea what this game is about. The good thing, when I first picked up the book, I didn’t see the “world of Warcraft” on the top, I was just really amazed by the artwork of a cover. And I’m glad I bought it, even though a bit confused, what’s this supposed to do with WoW!
I still haven’t googled up the game or anything, but I think I could understand the book quite well. I don’t know if this book has much new characters or just basically every character from that game, but the author described everything and everyone so well that I’m guessing you really don’t have to know the game to read this one. And I loved all the creatures — ahhh Murky is so cute!
I was also really amazed by the sketches on a few pages. First off, the art style is really beautiful, and Second, it also gives you more understanding of the creatures (that is, if they’ve been all used in the game and you’ve never played it).
I can’t wait to continue this series!

That was— I don’t know honestly how to describe it. It was stunning, beautiful, frightening, horrific at times, and surprising at the end. I definitely wouldn’t have ever guessed it would turn out the way it did. I might not be completely satisfied with it, but I am truly happy for the characters.
I haven’t cried as much I cried for these two books in a while, and it felt really good. I would consider myself as a really emotional person but I actually don’t cry often while reading. So when I do, you should see it as a huge compliment. Even when I mostly cried at people dying, who didn’t deserve it, but the fact that an author can make me cry at these people, screams talent.
I also really really loved that gay romance. It came quite unexpected, but I support and ship it a lot!!

It’s a really slow-paced book. The author apparently loves describing things, and I do wonder sometimes how he managed to get his crime novels popular, or are they slow-paced as well and not thrilling at all?
Well, I do like reading this series though. I love sinking deep into the world he’s created and following the characters into their next adventure.
In this book I especially loved the friendship between Benfro and Malkin. A bit unexpected and unusual but that’s just makes it so beautiful. I just wish Malkin would’ve stick around a bit longer, but perhaps he’ll make an appearance in the next books. I hope so.
Nonetheless, I already bought the 3rd book so let’s head right into it. :D

Again, really slow-paced. If I wouldn’t be so eager to see what will happen to the characters, I probably would have dropped it. But I am curious and excited to follow the journey, so I’m not dropping it.
I just bought the 4th book, and can’t wait to read it. Especially because it ended on such a cliffhanger!

Oof, my hatred for Melyn rises even higher in this book. Okay, to be honest, before I didn’t really hated him. Well, I did, but I couldn’t care much about him, he was rather just annoying. Now, I begin to rather hate him. He’s still annoying and so selfish, argh, it makes reading his passages sometimes hard. I really hope he gets what he deserves at the end.
Other than that, I’m glad Beulah got her magic back. Even though I’m on Benfro’s, Errol’s and Iolwen’s side, I could relate to Beulah being annoyed that a simple pregnancy took away her magic. I’ve never even been pregnant myself, but I guess I can imagine how annoying that must be. And, no, i don’t want her to regain the throne, but I’m simply glad she got her magic back.

Where to begin?
For one, I’m definitely upset – but more in a depressed way – in how it ended. I’m happy for those who have survived (the most of them, at least), but I can’t stop mourning for that one character who died. Surely a lot have died throughout the course of these books, especially in this last one.
While many of the villains died, and it is also expected to some of the heroes to die in an epic fantasy tale, I find it more than unfair for this particular character having died.
Reading the last few pages have truly been torturing, knowing that this character won’t somehow miraculously be reborn, surely not even the mother tree is that powerful. But mostly because tears clouded my sight. (And sadly I’m not as powerful as Clun is, to be able to see even though being blind.)
And even more upsetting that that one character died, but a particular other one survived. Oof...
Overall, reading the books have been a ride of emotions. So much has happened.
After all, about 18 or more years have passed in only 5 books. The characters went through a lot, more than most will in their lifetime.
And it literally feels like I’ve lived these 18 years as well, although it has been scarcely 3 months only since I started reading the first book.
The books will definitely hold a treasured place in my heart, but I’m not sure I will be able to read them again. Not without crying, at least.
Now, if you’ll excuse me. I have a character to mourn over.

Why the hell did I read this?
There was only one reason and that was what a booktuber once said. I won’t mentioned her name but she’s known for her sarcasm, irony and comedic exaggeration. I knew that she was exaggerating about that book as well, but nonetheless, my curiosity grew and I wanted to know if that part of the book she mentioned was true.
Well... i was deceived. There was no such thing that the YouTuber mentioned.
I honestly feel so betrayed, haha, oof.
The reason itself was ridiculous af, but I wanted to know and now that I know — that it didn’t happen — I really pity myself. To have wasted my time over sth like that.
Adding to that, the book is cringe as f* and I really really questioned my own sanity on why I continued reading. Why the hell waste my time like that?
I knew who’d end up in a romance, by the moment the characters met. It’s just so damn cliche that I wanted to throw up multiple times throughout the book.
Why do hetero shippings always have to be so damn toxic and cliche?
I really really hate males who interact like that with females, and I really really hate those typical female teenager protagonists, who are written to be badass and perfect with cliche flaws, yet when there’s a handsome guy around, they get weak af and only wait for the wolf to claim its prey.
I guess apart from the reason I mentioned above, the writing style of the author also was good enough to continue reading. Hell, it was her talent that made me want to finish the book, even upon knowing all too well how it would end (bc of all the cliches).
I actually feel a bit sorry for the author to waste her amazing talent with such a low book.
The plot and world-building in itself — not including the flat characters — are actually quite good and worth to explore. I wish she would’ve focused on that more, than throw an unnecessary teenage romance in there, as found in most YA fantasy books. It’s always the same with these books and I’m so sick of it.
Is it too much to ask for a fantasy book to be without romance?

Pretty boring
It’s good, alright. I already bought the 2nd book, and as much I expect him to be back, I really hope I won’t have to read from Nathaniel’s view again.
This boy stresses me out so much. His intentions are just – aargh. I kind of understand him, we all felt like that at some point. But his reasons were weak. And he just never learns. Even during the final battle, he only fought bc of revenge and pride, not bc he cared to save anyone.
I love Bartimaeus’ character tho and loved reading his view. His humor really carries the plot. It’s also refreshing to read about someone who doesn’t really care about the world and what happens to the magicians, only to save himself and so how survive all this.
While Nathaniel’s chapters were serious and (supposed to be) emotional, Bartimaeus’ in comparison to that were like a fresh breath of clean air.
The interesting thing about this book also is that Bartimaeus POV is written in first person, while Nathaniel’s POV in 3rd person.
It might be a bit confusing at first, but I personally got used to it pretty quickly.
As for the directed age group— the protagonist’s age makes you think it’s a middle grade book, but some scenes can be pretty detailed like in a YA. It might not be as gruesome and there isn’t any romance (thank the gods for that!), but a death count is there.
Which makes the book stand out pretty much, cause everyone can read it. For younger teens, they’d have to know themselves how much detail they can endure though, but as it is not a serious book to begin with, you can’t get nightmares from it anyway.
