This was a brilliant mix of haunting cruelty and academic pressure but also friendships and sisterhood. Loved all of the characterisation in this and the style was right up my street. Personally felt that there were avenues that could have been followed with more detail but that’s only because I enjoyed it so much!
Another amazing book from Amanda Montell! It’s perfectly pitched at an introductory level to linguistics but as someone who studies language I’ve thoroughly enjoyed tying chapters of this book in with my school work.
Really loved the structure of starting on a wide, dramatic scale and working down until the language applied to our day-to-day lives. Will be eagerly anticipating another book from her!

Clare and Henry (the protagonist couple of the story) have- and will always have- a special place in my heart. I have re-read this more times than I can count and I sob my heart out every time.
The theme of time and romance are woven together in an ongoing cycle of dramatic irony as adult Henry experiences encounters with his wife Clare that for her took place when she was little.
I’m yet to find another book like it.

Turns out all I needed to finish this, after being on page 10 for like a month, was a five hour uninterrupted reading session on a ferry
Thoroughly enjoyed, but what a not-answering-any-questions kind of ending
Liked the first five pages, otherwise not for me at all, wouldn’t recommend
