Wow. This book was so divorced from the film. Completely different universes.
If you have been avoiding this book thinking it was horror, like I did, stop. Right now. It's not even close to horror. The entire book is brilliantly benign.
Seriously, they are nothing alike at all. If you like witches give this a try.

A perfectly respectable and enjoyable book. A little too light on the fantasy aspect to net a higher rating. The writing style was strong. I will definitely read more by this author in future.
Pacing was rather slow, and the action sequences felt a tad forced. World building was also somewhat lacking for me. Though I did enjoy the field notes turned published work vibe.
I recommend reading this book when one is fully awake, so as not to miss anything.

This book. This series. Wow. Incredible.
I love watching this family grow and learning more about how the magic works. the world building is some of the best I've ever had occasion to read. Franny and Jet are fabulous. Fair warning though there is some talk of interrelation.
Imagery and lore are so on point. These books may just soothe the soul in these ridiculously tough times. I love knowing more about the characters that informed my favorite Halloween film. I have new appreciation for certain aspects.

I am constantly reminding myself that Mia is 16. A lot of her thought processes feel utterly foreign, even thinking back to my own high school days. She is so self absorbed and transparent and the I'm the ugly duckling routine gets old by entry 2.
I do appreciate the differences from the movie though. Such as one of her neighbors being trans. That never should have gotten eliminated. And apparently fat Louis is a tabby?! Blow my mind, why don't you.
