I was looking for more pages. I still don't know how Masada Max was. I might have to take my frustrations out by writing something about him.
I am always thrilled by Kathy Reichs work. I have been a fan since I discovered Bones was based on her books. her writing style is scientifically accurate and manages not to make me feel talked down to.
I really hope that some day the truth of Masada Max may be known. I also understand it if it never is. Some things are too sacred.

My god this book was a beastie! I am so glad I finished it though. It took me two months and change to read this thing.
First off do not read this book if you have trauma regarding rape. do read this book if you are in a good place and want to see a rapist get what he deserves. the world building was phenomenal. I do have to give it that. it felt so raw and realistic at times i didn't read it for days at a time. I was too busy digesting what i'd already read.
Follet weaves with great skill multiple major story arcs. there are no side characters in this book. Everyone is an mc. this is the first book I have ever read where I truly feel that no character died as a jumping off point for new narrative/to further plot.
That being said there are large chunks of this book written from the POV of the rapist and that was very hard to get through. it was important though in order to appropriately understand that he more than deserves what he gets in the end. this book is part of a larger series, though it read like a standalone. I feel no deep urge to torture myself with the next one.

This was like slipping on a comfy pair of jeans. I haven't read this one before now but it was so familiar to read about this world again that I just might have to start reading the dark artifices.
Magnus was himself no matter who was writing what. it felt very cohesive for a three way project. Though I would have really loved a story involving Magnus needing to pose as Marie antoinette and being "executed" for her "crimes". You know in order to keep historically accurate while still saving her. And I really want to know why he got kicked out of Peru. I suspect Ragnor was at fault here.

This book was fantastic! It also confused me for an anthropology final I just wrote! Live and learn. the imagery was spot on and the details of the Inca and Spanish cultures were excellent. Just the right amount of embellishment here and there to carry the narrative.
The worldbuilding blew my mind! I found myself savouring this read (slowing the F down to enjoy it). I will definitely be looking for future fiction by this author. There are some mentions of incest in this book. none of these relationships are deeply discussed and are certainly not the focus. it merely there as cultural context. So, read with caution if you have trauma regarding such things, or if it is one of your squicks.

This book was generously provided to me by the publisher via Library Thing. let's start with the pacing. This book was a little slower going for me. I found the characters were not wholly fleshed out ( this may be because it is book two and I haven't yet read book one).
The world building was of reasonable quality. I did feel certain elements could have been delved into a bit deeper, such as when someone is considered unreclaimable. the descriptions of clothing were apt for the time period of the story.
I liked how she handled her token gay. that being said that is all it felt like, a token character. I felt the grand deceiver/ reclaimer bit refreshing. nobody is expected to save the world alone here.
ultimately it was a decent book, it just didn't fully click for me at this time. I will reread down the road after having read the first book.

I strongly recommend reading this if you want a solid sample of how to do a multiple points of view narration style. This is however the only thing I can recommend it for.
I had to read this for a class. it deals with heavy subject matter including PTSD and war. I found myself really struggling through it.

This book was hilarious. A very easy quick read. Some of them are highly offensive. You have been warned.
