I received this free from the publisher via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This took me months to read, it really wasn't for me.
I was attracted by the cover, the summary and because I heard a lot about it before it came out (it's been a while, I know).
Honestly, the concept was very good: the historical setting, the mythology, the plot, almost everything came together for an excellent book.
The main problem I had with my reading was therefore entirely to do with the writing and the characters. I'd been told it was going to be an adult book, but to me it sounded more like YA or even middle grade. Overall, it was very immature, especially the dialogue and the main character. This clearly prevented me from enjoying my reading.
Nevertheless, I think it's a book that a younger audience will enjoy.

I was immediately drawn to the cover as I scrolled through netgalley and was not at all disappointed (and now I'm craving squash soup).
To begin with, the plates, the choice of colors and the style are magnificent. This is probably one of the most beautiful graphic novels I've ever read.
I'm usually not the best public for graphic novel, however I try to read more of them. The story is a new favorite of mine. I don't know if it has anything to do with the start of autumn and the Halloween season, but I got hooked on the story very quickly. A badass ogress, a dangerous mist and a coven of witches? Are you kidding? This is the story I've been waiting for.
I must say, though, that I was a little confused by the presence of the human (why is she following them? Why doesn't it occur to the witches to find out?) I'm waiting for volume 2 to see if we'll get an answer to that question, or if her presence was merely to set the romance in motion, which could have been done better.
And whoa the cliffhanger!! I was on the edge of my seat, excited to read more, clicked on next page and.... end. It's so frustrating but also means it was really really good. Can't wait for part 2!
A bonus point because it's translated from French, thank you for introducing me to the author of this superb graphic novel I'll be keeping an eye out for his next works.

It does not matter how Ansel felt. His pain is irrelevant, beyond the horizon of her consideration. It does not matter why he killed those girls, or Jenny. Hazel believes that a person can be evil, and nothing more. There are millions of men out there who want to hurt women—people seem to think that Ansel Packer is extraordinary, because he actually did.

I skimmed the last 40% it was a hassle to read and I genuinely don't know why? The plot and the writing is pretty good and characters were OK (not my favorites but I've seen worse!). It was kind of slow to unpack and the end was quite underwhelming. Sometimes the chapters were too long for not much happening which is annoying.
I don't know I was expecting so much more from the premise, maybe a darker/gloomier atmosphere.
I feel like I should just call it quit with urban fantasy atp bc I feel bad whenever comes the time to rate

This was one of my most anticipated read, so I can't believe I'm saying this but THANK GOD it's finished.
I really really loved the premise and I understand why so many people loved it so I'm super disappointed that it didn't work for me.
I found that the characters were not likeable, and I don't mean it in a "Valkyr is a twat" kind of way but they are just so bland, boring, shallow and uninteresting. I couldn't care less what happened to them.
As of the plot, I was really into it until 55-60%, then it started to feel like a chore to finish the book. It was just not interesting imo?? I feel like this could've been way shorter.

I couldn't bring myself to finish this. I don't care about all the fuss from the dodgy interview we all heard of.
From the start, I actually really liked it. It was engaging, the pacing was good and I found myself genuinely wanting to know more. But quickly, everything went down. The pacing slowed down, the characters were still super shallow and unlikable and when I stopped (at around 60%) absolutely nothing was happening. It was just getting super long and tiring to keep reading about nothing really. I'm a little bit upset and disappointing because I was looking for this releaseand it was a huge let down.
While I enjoy Greek mythologies books and retelling, I personally don't know that much about the Odyssey nor The Penelopiad and I thought that I would learn some history but apart from details there wasn't much (at least until when I stopped).
