Extremely unique and beautifully told. I cant wait to see where this series goes. It reminds me a lot of x-men comics. Where the fantastical elements are just back drops to the story being told. Well done. 

My favorite part about this book is the main character Kip. A chubby hero is extremely unique in the world of fantasy. It adds laughs with his self depreciating humor but also makes him feel more genuine. I particularly love how he's always pulling up his britches.

Edit- I just completed this series. If a good ending is important to you pick another series. I'm not going to go back and change my previous ratings for all the books in the series (even though I am tempted). I will however put a warning here so you know going in. The ending is trash.

Fun. Just plain enjoyable. A little cringe at times with a humor but he pulls it off.
