adventurous lighthearted fast-paced

Overall it was enjoyable but it felt more like an epic fairytale than epic fantasy.

The first part of this book is fun. Super dialog heavy with zero atmosphere but that works because you already know the star trek universe. You can fill in the blanks with all the star trek you've watched. It's not perfect but it was fun to read.
Then the author decides that he doesn't want to end the story when he should. Like he was going for word count. Or just wanted space to work through his writers block in an almost yet not quite meta way. He could of just went back and added more details or scenes or character development. Added to the actual story. Instead he adds a few creative writing journal entries.
I would recommend just not reading past chapter 24. The rest is self indulgent dribble.

A lot can happen in 500+ pages. Mostly enjoyable and only occasionally immature. Plus it includes the following... 🐖⛰️🏋‍♀️🔥🥓.

However, the rest of the series is a disappointment. It becomes darker and more immature which is a terrible combo. Due to the level of whining alone I must retroactively knock my original rating of a 4 down to a more appropriate average rating. Any enjoyment is canceled out by a negative so I feel this is more accurate. None of this best series ever nonsense. 🙄

After completing the trilogy it's fun to think about this book and how it all started. Strongly recommend.

Strongly recommend. If your a fan of fantasy you should be reading this. My enjoyment of this grows the longer the stories stick with me and that's the best mark of a truly great fantasy epic.

I think it's strange how critical some of these reviews are. I rate books on pure enjoyment level so maybe I just don't get it but generally you don't see these types of complaints for a fantasy series. Some of the best fantasy stories out there have roots in real cultures and old myths. Then there's those who have trouble with foreign pronunciations (like me)... go for the audio. Michael Kramer is the perfect narrator for this series. If you didn't know he also narrators the wheel of time and the cosmere. Basically I don't think you should let these haters deter you from this. It's great.
