A refreshing new study on the life of Charlotte Brontë. This book is suitable for both students and the casual reader as Franklin has an easy to follow writing style. I loved the analysis of Brontë's work and how Franklin tackled myths surrounding Charlotte and her family. The last chapter on places connected with the family was an excellent addition. I' m sad that I finished this book within two days.
Note to readers: Firstly, this is NOT a biography of Lady Jane Grey. This is an in-depth analysis of the events of the 13 day reign of Lady Jane Grey. I would not recommend for the casual reader - it helps if you have a lot of background information on the period. I thought some of the other reviews where unfair as Ives stated that he wasn't writing a biography.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ives' book. He tackles the myths surrounding Lady Jane and wrote a fantastic analysis. His use of primary sources, and quoting them, was helpful. My only issues with the book is that I wished he translated some of the Latin quotations (I know, it's a standard in these more academic books). I also felt that the structure could have been better.
I would recommend for Tudor lovers who love the more in-depth look at the time period. This would also be handy for students who are writing essays on Edward VI's devise for the succession as Ives covers this deeply.

Unequal Affections is a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The novel starts just after Mr Darcy's insulting 1st proposal to Elizabeth Bennett. However, in Ormiston's retelling, Lizzy accepts Mr Darcy's offer of marriage before he becomes "humbled".
This is such a creative and intriguing "what if" novel. Ormiston writes beautifully and convincingly writes the P&P characters. At times the characters' speeches can feel a bit too modern. It wasn't as witty as the original Austen work (which, to be fair, is difficult to achieve). However, it was a thoroughly good read.
This is a wonderful book. It's definitely one that fans of Pride and Prejudice should give a go. I certainly hope that Ormiston writes more in the future.
