Loved this so much! I felt completely immersed in this world and invested in the characters. It was so believable. The ending felt a bit abrupt, but that was probably because I wanted more. One of my favourites of 2018.

It was ok. Probably a little too sweet and quirky for my taste, and although I love a good literary reference, I thought these were shoved down my throat. But it was ok - good pallet cleanser.

Wow! Dare I say this is her best yet? As in The Dry, Jane Harper is so good at conveying that stifling, oppressive feel of the Australian outback. The mystery kept me guessing throughout the novel, I was so sure I knew what happened, only to change my mind again and again. I couldn't put it down.

It was brilliantly written - too good actually, as I couldn't bring myself to finish it. As a mother who has spent a bit of time in hospital with her children, I found this book distressing and I couldn't go on. I will definitely pick up another Sarah Moss book though - her writing is superb.

So, after reading this (and my brief dalliance with Kelly Link) I have come to realise something about myself as a reader. I don't take well to the absurd. I need some semblance of logic and order to my stories. They may be magical, but I need them to be plausible (if that makes sense?) This collection had both the plausible (a witch pirate) and the absurd (an astronomer falling in love with an insect! -DNF). So now I know.

Gritty, compelling and real.

4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this (and tbh I was expecting to be disappointed), I found it thoughtful and philosophical. Not so much about the story, but more of a collection of ideas. I will be reading more from Matt Haig.

One of my kids' favourites! Truly Magical.
